Firefighters battled a controlled blaze on the tarmac at Penn State's University Park Airport on May 23 during a full-scale emergency exercise. The exercise was designed to provide real-time training and recertification for emergency response personnel from around the Centre Region.

A Moroccan farmer taught Penn State students about the properties of vetiver grass, including its ability to clean wastewater. The grass could be used as part of a solution to water-quality problems being experienced in Assoul, Morocco, where students spent time recently.

Students from Penn State Lehigh Valley swept the top spots at the Penn State Regional Undergraduate Research Symposium held at Penn State Brandywine on Apr. 19. Kamil Payano Sosa, a sophomore psychology major from Allentown, took first place in the humanities category with her poster, "Economic Recession and Students' Stress Levels." Vinod Jeyaretnam, a junior from Nazareth, took first place in the STEM category with his poster, "Chronotropic Effects of Select Cardiovascular Drugs on the Developing Vertebrate Embryonic Heart." Tamara Mose Brown, assistant professor of sociology at Brooklyn College in New York, will present Penn State Lehigh Valley's next Teaching International lecture at 11 a.m. April 19, in room 302 at the campus in Center Valley. Brown will discuss her 2011 book "Raising Brooklyn: Nannies, Childcare, and Caribbeans Creating Community." The lecture is free and open to the public. (more)

Campus joins national effort to train nurses in veterans' health needs

The Penn State Lehigh Valley Practical Nursing Program has announced a partnership with the Joining Forces initiative, a coordinated, nationwide effort designed to further educate the nation's 3 million nurses in order to prepare them to meet the unique health needs of service members, veterans and their families. The initiative involves more than 150 state and national nursing organizations and more than 500 nursing schools across all 50 states, Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico. (more)

The Penn State Lehigh Valley CHANCE program, an educational outreach and professional development program in conservation biology, has received the 2012 Penn State Award for Community Engagement and Scholarship. The award recognizes a project that best exemplifies Penn State as an "engaged institution," which the Kellogg Commission defines as an institution that has redesigned teaching, research and extension and service functions to become even more sympathetically and productively involved with its communities. The Arts Project at Penn State Lehigh Valley has announced a new workshop for adults, age 55-plus. Watercolor, instructed by James Doddy, will be held May 8, 15 and 22. The cost of the class is $50. The campus offers newly renovated studio facilities and is conveniently located across from the Promenade Shops at Saucon Valley.

The Gallery at Penn State Lehigh Valley will present a new exhibit from IDEA: Inter-District Experience in the Arts. "QRC:ART - Contemporary Melding of Art and Today's Technology through Young Minds," will run from May 14-June 20, 2012 with a reception from 5-7 p.m. on May 17. The exhibit and reception are free and open to the public. This exhibition was made possible by a grant from the Erwin J. and Gertrude K. Neusch Fund of the Lehigh Valley Community Foundation. Autism is the fastest-growing serious developmental disability in the U.S. One in 110 children is diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder, yet there are no fully effective means of prevention, treatment or a cure. On April 2, Penn State Lehigh Valley will join hundreds of other businesses and organizations across the country to help shine a light on autism through the Autism Speaks Light It Up Blue campaign. During the campaign, the Nittany Lion Shrine at the north entrance of the campus will be awash in special blue light. (more)
