Mike Rybar made final adjustments to the Penn State Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineering teams Goldberg machine prior to the 2012 Rube Goldberg competition held on Feb. 11 at Penn State's Nittany Lion Inn. Rybar and his team created a musically themed machine that needed to complete a simple task (inflate a balloon) in twenty or more elaborate steps. The annual competition is named for cartoonist Rube Goldberg who created famous artwork depicting overly complicated machines doing everyday tasks.

'Roaring Recipes' goes on sale March 1

CENTER VALLEY, Pa. -- "Roaring Recipes," a commemorative cookbook featuring recipes from students, faculty, staff, alumni and friends of Penn State Lehigh Valley, will be available for sale beginning March 1. A kickoff event will be held at noon on March 1 in the campus' Centre Hall. The cost of the cookbook is $20, with proceeds benefiting student groups, adult learners and the campus. The book will be available for purchase at the Penn State Lehigh Valley Bookstore, and online at www.lvwcookbook.webs.com.

Local THON team smashes fundraising record

During the weekend of Feb. 17-20, two Lehigh Valley students joined hundreds of other Penn State students in a 46-hour, no sitting, no sleeping dance marathon, affectionately known as THON, to raise money for the fight against pediatric cancer. Through their year-long efforts, the Penn State Lehigh Valley team smashed the 2011 campus total, which was just over $24,000, by raising more than $31,000. In total, THON raised more than $10.68 million for the Four Diamonds Fund, beating the 2011 total of more than $9 million. (more)

SAGE announces spring speaker series

Senior Adults Gaining Enrichment (SAGE), an outreach program of Penn State Lehigh Valley, has announced the schedule for its spring 2012 four-part lecture series. Each SAGE session begins with coffee at 10:30 a.m., the featured speaker at 11 a.m., and lunch at noon. The Arts Project at Penn State Lehigh Valley has announced a new series of workshops for adults, age 55-plus. The cost of each class, which will meet four times during the month of March, is $50. As part of Penn State Lehigh Valley's 100th anniversary celebration, The Gallery at Penn State Lehigh Valley is recognizing the role of women in the campus' history with a new exhibit, "Homefront Heroes: Women of WWII," from Feb. 27-Apr.28. An artist talk will be held at 3 p.m. on March 1, followed by a reception from 5-7 p.m. The exhibit, artist talk, and reception are free and open to the public. (more)

The Lehigh Valley Chapter of the Penn State Alumni Association will host its annual Phil Grosz Night event at 5:30 p.m. on Feb. 16 at the campus in Center Valley. A buffet dinner will begin at 6 p.m. with Grosz scheduled to speak about new Penn State football recruits and coaching staff at 7 p.m.

Maureen S. Joly of Allentown, Pa., has accepted the position as director of development at Penn State Lehigh Valley. In this position, Joly will be responsible for overseeing and managing all fundraising efforts for the campus.

Joly has 18 years of experience in development and fundraising in the Lehigh Valley. Prior to her appointment, she was the director of development for the Allentown Symphony Association, and has worked for other nonprofit organizations including Grace Montessori School and Sacred Heart Hospital. Alumni Society Ice Cream Sale under way

The Penn State Lehigh Valley Alumni Society is now taking orders for its spring Berkey Creamery ice cream sale. Orders are being accepted through March 12 and ice cream will be available for pick up from 5-7 p.m. on March 29 at the campus in Center Valley. Proceeds from the ice cream sale benefit the Alumni Society's First-Year Scholarship fund for Penn State Lehigh Valley students.

Logan Bonner, a Penn State Lehigh Valley sophomore, has been chosen to present his research at Pennsylvania's Undergraduate Research at the Capitol (URC-PA) event to be held March 27 in Harrisburg. Bonner's poster, Stimulation of Red Blood Cell Differentiation In Vitro: Replication of a Classic Experiment Enhances Inquiry in the Undergraduate Laboratory, is one of only four selected to represent Penn State at the event.
