The Thomas D. Larson Pennsylvania Transportation Institute at Penn State has announced that William W. Millar will deliver the 2011 Thomas D. Larson Distinguished Transportation Lecture, titled "Why Would Anyone Invest in Public Transportation?" The lecture will be delivered at 1:30 p.m. on Dec. 6, in Room 105 of the Penn Stater Conference Center Hotel on the University Park campus, in conjunction with the 17th annual Transportation Engineering and Safety Conference, Dec. 7-9. Transportation pioneer Joseph Sussman will present "Transportation in Contemporary Society: A Complex Systems Approach" at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 8, in room 105 at the Penn Stater Conference Center Hotel. Sussman's talk is the 2009 Thomas D. Larson Transportation Lecture and is being presented in conjunction with the 15th annual Transportation Engineering and Safety Conference being held Dec. 9-11. Martin Pietrucha, professor of civil engineering, has been named the director of the Thomas D. Larson Transportation Institute (LTI). Pietrucha had been serving as the LTI interim director since July 15 and has been a member of the Penn State faculty since 1990. He previously served as director of the Science, Technology and Society Program in the College of Engineering. (more)
A caravan of electric and renewable energy vehicles will make a pit stop at Penn State at 10 a.m. Friday, July 17, at the MorningStar solar home on the corner of Park Avenue and Porter Road. The Renew America Roadtrip, consisting of two 2009 Tesla Roadsters and a Nissan Altima hybrid chase vehicle, is crossing the country to spread the word about renewable energy and electric vehicles and to raise money for green charities. Yorktown Heights, N.Y., native Stephen Joseph Damin, a master's degree candidate in civil engineering and student researcher at the Thomas D. Larson Pennsylvania Transportation Institute (LTI) at Penn State, has been selected to receive the Mid-Atlantic Universities Transportation Center (MAUTC) Student of the Year Award. Damin was honored for his accomplishments at the 12th Annual Council of University Transportation Centers Awards Banquet, held in conjunction with the Transportation Research Board's annual meeting, on Jan. 10 at the Omni Shoreham Hotel in Washington, D.C. A convoy of Saturn hybrid vehicles participating in next week's Inauguration Day ceremonies will make a stop at Penn State on Thursday, Jan. 15, before heading to Washington, D.C. The vehicles, requested by the Barack Obama Inauguration Committee, will be on display from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the parking lot between Reber Building and the Hintz Family Alumni Center. The event is free and open to the public. "The intention is to display (the vehicles) as the types of eco-friendly transportation that President-elect Obama endorses," said Craig Colwell, director of operations and general sales manager for Saturn of State College, which is supporting the local event.
