Firefighters battled a controlled blaze on the tarmac at Penn State's University Park Airport on May 23 during a full-scale emergency exercise. The exercise was designed to provide real-time training and recertification for emergency response personnel from around the Centre Region.

A Moroccan farmer taught Penn State students about the properties of vetiver grass, including its ability to clean wastewater. The grass could be used as part of a solution to water-quality problems being experienced in Assoul, Morocco, where students spent time recently.

On the next episode of "Conversations from Penn State," filmmaker Ken Burns talks about what it's like to "wake the dead" by bringing to light a diverse assortment of American stories and presenting them in a way that can appeal to everyone. The show will air at noon on Monday, Aug. 23 on the Big Ten Network. It also will air at 9 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 12 on WPSU-TV. (more)

Award-winning documentary filmmaker Ken Burns will receive an honorary doctoral degree from Penn State. The University's Board of Trustees approved Burns as an honorary-degree recipient today (March 20). He will receive the degree of doctor of humane letters at one of Penn State's future commencement ceremonies. (more)

WPSU seeking World War II stories at Altoona event

WPSU invites the "greatest generation" to recount their unique experiences of World War II. WPSU-TV is asking those who lived through World War II to offer their stories during a video recording session to be held on Saturday, May 3, at the Penn State Altoona campus. In order to take part in the event, those with first-person accounts of World War II must call (814) 863-6636 to schedule an appointment. Spaces are limited, anyone interested should call soon. Appointments must be made by Thursday, April 24. (more)
