After reviewing a record number of entries, Mid-Atlantic Construction magazine named Penn State University Dickinson School of Law's new University Park Lewis Katz Building "Project of the Year" in the higher education/research facility category. The jury of architects, engineers, and general contractors focused on those projects that best achieved the goals of the project team; adopted innovative approaches; executed exceptional design and craftsmanship; maintained safe sites; and displayed strong teamwork. Penn State's Dickinson School of Law celebrated the opening of its new 114,000-square-foot Lewis Katz Building with a dedication ceremony Friday afternoon (April 24). The event also marks the start of a yearlong celebration honoring the 175th anniversary of the Dickinson School of Law, which held its first class on April 1, 1834. Participants in the ceremony included Penn State University President Graham B. Spanier; Philip J. McConnaughay, dean of The Dickinson School of Law; Lewis Katz, the Dickinson School of Law class of 1966; H. Laddie Montague Jr., the Dickinson School of Law class of 1963; James Broadhurst, chair of Penn State's Board of Trustees; and Richard M. Olcott, design partner, Polshek Partnership Architects. In its inaugural year, Penn State's School of International Affairs, housed within The Dickinson School of Law, is preparing its first class of 27 students for critical issues stemming from the impact of globalization, the University's Board of Trustees learned in a presentation Friday (Jan. 23). Tiyanjana Maluwa, director of the School of International Affairs, explained to the board that a multidisciplinary curriculum offers students the opportunity to gain a master's degree with several specialty concentrations, including science, technology and environment, trade and economics and global leadership and management. Dickinson School of Law faculty and staff at University Park reported for work in a brand new place, the Lewis Katz Building, for the first time on Monday, Dec. 22. This transition marks another stage of the Dickinson School of Law's move from Beam Building near North Halls to the new facility on the corner of Bigler Road and Services Road. Students will make themselves at home beginning Jan. 5, 2009, with classes starting on Jan. 9. A formal opening ceremony will take place in April 2009. Highlights of the building include its LEED Certification, extensive library facility, video conferencing capability, and integration of traditional legal learning with cutting-edge telecommunications frequently found in many legal institutions of the 21st century.
