Firefighters battled a controlled blaze on the tarmac at Penn State's University Park Airport on May 23 during a full-scale emergency exercise. The exercise was designed to provide real-time training and recertification for emergency response personnel from around the Centre Region.

A Moroccan farmer taught Penn State students about the properties of vetiver grass, including its ability to clean wastewater. The grass could be used as part of a solution to water-quality problems being experienced in Assoul, Morocco, where students spent time recently.

The Penn State community is invited to attend the first annual KINBER Member Meeting, to be held April 19-20 at Montgomery County Community College in Blue Bell, Pa. KINBER, the Keystone Initiative for Network Based Education and Research, is a nonprofit organization of cooperating institutions in higher education, healthcare, economic development and other sectors. KINBER's goal is to manage and promote PennREN, a statewide broadband "super network" that connects underserved communities with research entities across Pennsylvania. (more)

Health care professionals, educators, librarians and researchers are talking with one another like never before as Pennsylvanians prepare for the launch of the commonwealth's new Pennsylvania Research and Education Network (PennREN). A broadband network that will provide 1,600 miles of fiber through 39 Pennsylvania counties, PennREN will be one of the largest networks ever funded by the National Telecommunications and Information Agency (NTIA). Penn State is collaborating with other leading Pennsylvania institutions in designing and shaping the scope of the new, statewide broadband superhighway. (more)

Jeff Reel, director within ITS Telecommunications and Networking Services, has recently been selected as executive director of the Keystone Initiative for Network Based Education and Research (KINBER). Reel will lead the KINBER coalition in the implementation of the Pennsylvania Research and Education Network (PennREN), a statewide broadband network designed to support educational, research, health, and economic development partners across the commonwealth. KINBER, a nonprofit corporation, was recently awarded $99 million in federal stimulus funding to build the network over the next three years. (more)

More than $99 million in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funding was awarded today (Feb. 18) to the Keystone Initiative for Network-Based Education and Research (KINBER). Penn State is a founding member of KINBER, a coalition of Pennsylvania colleges and universities, research and healthcare organizations and economic development entities. The award will help fund the construction and management of the Pennsylvania Research and Education Network (PennREN), a robust, statewide broadband education and research network. (more)
