Firefighters battled a controlled blaze on the tarmac at Penn State's University Park Airport on May 23 during a full-scale emergency exercise. The exercise was designed to provide real-time training and recertification for emergency response personnel from around the Centre Region.

A Moroccan farmer taught Penn State students about the properties of vetiver grass, including its ability to clean wastewater. The grass could be used as part of a solution to water-quality problems being experienced in Assoul, Morocco, where students spent time recently.

Student Code of Conduct now prohibits synthetic marijuana

On March 1, 2011, the United States Drug Enforcement Agency added the five common chemical compounds found in synthetic marijuana to the list of Schedule 1 prohibited drugs. These chemicals are now classified with ecstasy, LSD and marijuana, making the sale and possession of synthetic cannabinoids illegal in all 50 states. Use, possession, or distribution of synthetic cannabinoid products is now a violation of the Penn State Student Code of Conduct, similar to natural marijuana use and possession. (more)

State College Borough Police and Penn State Police have completed a five-week, joint investigation into the source of alcohol involving the death of Penn State student Joseph Dado, 18, who was found dead Sept. 21 on campus after falling. Toxicology reports showed his blood alcohol content was .169 percent. Police filed criminal charges with Magisterial District Justice Jonathan Grine today (Oct. 29) against two fraternities and two individuals. (more)

University Police and the Office of Judicial Affairs will offer Penn State students the chance to prove their academic prowess and win prizes at the Spring Break Trivia Bowl from 7-9 p.m. on Monday, March 2 in Heritage Hall of the HUB-Robeson Center on the University Park campus. Teams of one, two or three students can compete and categories will include spring break music, movies, locations, activities/sports, alternatives and safety tips. (more)

State College Borough police Thursday (Nov. 6) announced the first round of arrests related to the Oct. 26 disturbance in downtown State College that brought 5,000 people into the streets following a Penn State football win over Ohio State. (more)
