When sports stories become linked with other social and business issues, professional journalists tend to offer deeper and broader coverage than sports bloggers, according to Penn State researchers. In a study of the way mainstream columnists and popular bloggers covered conservative talk show host Rush Limbaugh's involvement in a partnership attempting to buy a professional football team, the researchers showed that journalists were more likely to include issues such as race and business in their columns, said Marie Hardin, associate director of the John Curley Center for Sports Journalism in the College of Communications. Several Penn State centers with a focus on the sports industry will present an interdisciplinary panel discussion with Pittsburgh Steelers' Chairman Dan Rooney, son of the Steelers' founder Art "the Chief" Rooney, from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Monday, April 7, in 110 Business Building, University Park. The panel discussion, "Sports Governance and Equal Opportunity: The Life's Perspectives of Pittsburgh Steelers' Chairman Dan Rooney," commemorates the recent publication of Rooney's autobiography, "Dan Rooney: My 75 Years with the Pittsburgh Steelers and the NFL."
