When sports stories become linked with other social and business issues, professional journalists tend to offer deeper and broader coverage than sports bloggers, according to Penn State researchers. In a study of the way mainstream columnists and popular bloggers covered conservative talk show host Rush Limbaugh's involvement in a partnership attempting to buy a professional football team, the researchers showed that journalists were more likely to include issues such as race and business in their columns, said Marie Hardin, associate director of the John Curley Center for Sports Journalism in the College of Communications. Three new episodes of the Big Ten Network's "Expert Opinion with Graham Spanier" take on popular topics in medical news, on the big screen and during game-day debates.
"Athletes and Head Injuries" debuted at noon Eastern time on Monday, May 31; the "Athlete Management and Representation" edition of "Expert Opinion" is scheduled to begin airing at noon Eastern time on Monday, June 21; and "Inside the World of Officiating" is scheduled to air at noon Eastern time on Monday, June 28. College sports information offices have more gender diversity than newspaper sports departments, but women are still underrepresented in management, work in low status positions and generally leave the profession far earlier than their male counterparts, according to a recent study. (more)

From the impact of social media on sports journalism to careers for burgeoning sports journalists, to the experience of NCAA athletes transitioning to life after college, "Expert Opinion with Graham Spanier" explores three topics foremost on the minds of professionals related to the business of covering college sports. Penn State President Graham Spanier hosts three hour-long shows in October that bring together the perspectives of prominent sports journalists, sports media executives and former collegiate and professional sports athletes, respectively, to discuss "Careers in Sports Journalism," debuting Oct. 7; "Impact of New Media," airing Oct. 14; and "Life After the NCAA," airing Oct. 21. Award-winning author, sportswriter and commentator John Feinstein visited Penn State to participate in a special event conducted by the John Curley Center for Sports Journalism at 6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 19, in 105 Forum Building. A "conversation" with Feinstein was moderated by Malcolm Moran, the Knight Chair in Sports Journalism and Society and director of the Center for Sports Journalism. (more)

Several Penn State centers with a focus on the sports industry will present an interdisciplinary panel discussion with Pittsburgh Steelers' Chairman Dan Rooney, son of the Steelers' founder Art "the Chief" Rooney, from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Monday, April 7, in 110 Business Building, University Park. The panel discussion, "Sports Governance and Equal Opportunity: The Life's Perspectives of Pittsburgh Steelers' Chairman Dan Rooney," commemorates the recent publication of Rooney's autobiography, "Dan Rooney: My 75 Years with the Pittsburgh Steelers and the NFL."
