The Big Ten Network will recognize the best of Big Ten sports in 2009-10 with the third annual Big Ten Network Awards live at 7 p.m. ET on Wednesday, June 23. Mike Hall and Rick Pizzo will host the one-hour show. Penn State has nominees in three of the eight award categories, as well as strong candidates for the conference's male and female student-athletes of the year in Megan Hodge (women's volleyball) and Jason Yeisley (mens's soccer). Standout Nittany Lion student-athletes Ashley Griffith (Mt. Laurel, N.J.) and Jason Yeisley (Allentown, Pa.) have been named Penn State's 2010 recipients of the Big Ten Medal of Honor. Griffith, a senior, starred as a four-year starter on the softball team while Yeisley, a December 2009 graduate, was a three-time All-Big Ten men's soccer player. The Big Ten Medal of Honor was established in 1914 when the conference endowed the award, which was to be presented annually to a student in the graduating class of each university that demonstrated proficiency in scholarship and athletics. In 1982, the Medal of Honor was expanded to include a senior female athlete from each institution. (more)
Former Nittany Lions Megan Hodge (Durham, N.C.) and Jason Yeisley (Allentown, Pa.) have been selected as the 2010 Penn State Athletes of the Year. Hodge, a four-time All-American, led the women's volleyball team to three consecutive national championships while Yeisley was a three-time All-Big Ten men's soccer player. Yeisley and Hodge are now, respectively, eligible for the Big Ten's Jesse Owens Male Athlete of the Year Award and Suzy Favor Female Athlete of the Year Award. Jason Yeisley (Allentown, Pa.) and Daphne Skelos (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) have been selected as Penn State's recipients of the 2010 Big Ten Outstanding Sportsmanship Award. Both Skelos and Yeisley were the only student-athletes honored by the conference from their respective sports, women's swimming and men's soccer, among the group of 22. One member of each varsity sports team on every campus was chosen by his or her institution as a Sportsmanship Award honoree. From each university's list, two Outstanding Sportsmanship Award winners were then selected. (more)
Former Penn State forward Jason Yeisley was selected by FC Dallas with the sixth pick in the third round of the 2010 Major League Soccer SuperDraft, which was held on Thursday afternoon in Philadelphia. The Allentown, Pa. native was the 38th overall player drafted and the first from the Big Ten. "I am very excited to be drafted by FC Dallas and have the opportunity to potentially continue my soccer career," said Yeisley. "I owe so much to everyone at Penn State who helped me get to where I am today. I was very lucky to have the quality medical and training staff that helped me return from injury successfully. The Penn State soccer program is among the best in the country and I am proud to have been a part of it." (more)
Penn State senior forward Jason Yeisley (Allentown, Pa.) has been selected as the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award honoree in men's soccer for 2009. The award, chosen by a nationwide vote of Division I men's coaches, national soccer media and fans, is awarded annually to the most outstanding senior student-athlete in NCAA Division I men's soccer. The announcement and trophy presentation were made tonight by Lowe's, an official Corporate Partner of the NCAA, during the 2009 Men's College Cup in Cary, North Carolina. An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School, the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities. q (more)
Senior forward Jason Yeisley (Allentown, Pa.) has been honored on the 2009 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America(R) First Team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America. Awarded in recognition for achievements earned both on the field and in the classroom, Yeisley becomes the second Nittany Lion soccer player to be named to the ESPN The Magazine first team in the last two years, as midfielder Ryan Badaracco was a 2008 honoree. Senior forward Jason Yeisley (Allentown, Pa.) was named Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year, the conference office announced on Thursday, highlighting awards presented to five Nittany Lions in honor of their standout 2009 seasons. Yeisley joins junior midfielder Matheus Braga (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) and junior defender Andres Casais (Caracas, Venezuela) as First Team All-Big Ten selections while sophomore forward Corey Hertzog (Reading, Pa.) and junior midfielder Drew Cost (West Chester, Pa.) were recognized on the second team. Two members of the Big Ten-leading Penn State men's soccer team, senior forward Jason Yeisley (Allentown, Pa.) and junior midfielder Matheus Braga (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil), have been recognized with conference and national honors for their standout play in two Nittany Lion victories last week. Yeisley, a candidate for All-America honors and Big Ten Player of the Year, was named to the College Soccer News National Team of the Week. Braga was honored as Big Ten Co-Offensive Player of the Week for tallying an assist in Penn State's rout of Penn on Wednesday and for scoring the game-winning goal in the victory over conference foe Michigan State on Sunday.
