New graduates of Penn State's Eberly College of Science listened to the commencement address provided by United States Secretary of Energy Steven Chu during spring 2012 graduation ceremonies held May 5 at the Bryce Jordan Center on the University Park campus.

A Moroccan farmer taught Penn State students about the properties of vetiver grass, including its ability to clean wastewater. The grass could be used as part of a solution to water-quality problems being experienced in Assoul, Morocco, where students spent time recently.

First Paterno Fellows graduating class honored in ceremony

The first graduating class of Paterno Fellows was recognized at a recent ceremony by Sue Paterno and the deans of the College of the Liberal Arts and the Schreyer Honors College. Paterno Fellow Amy Copley served as the student speaker, representing nearly 80 graduates in the program. "The Paterno Fellows Program is a landmark collaboration between the College of the Liberal Arts and the Schreyer Honors College, offering an education for leadership to students who accept its challenges and succeed," said Jack Selzer, the Barry Director of the program. "The program is named for longtime Penn State benefactors Joe and Sue Paterno and their family because of their commitment to excellence, ethics, service and leadership. Meeting the academic and leadership challenges is what distinguishes these students." (more)

Kerri Jasinnas, of Churchville, Pa., in Bucks County, near Philadelphia, earned two degrees: Spanish and English as the student marshal for Penn State's College of the Liberal Arts at Penn State's summer commencement ceremony on August 12 on the University Park campus. A Schreyer Honors College Scholar, she is the first student in the Paterno Fellows Program to earn her degree since the 2008 launch of the honors and leadership program by the College of the Liberal Arts. Penn State alumnus Richard "Rick" Barry and his wife, Sue, have made a leadership gift to the College of the Liberal Arts to endow the position of director of the Paterno Liberal Arts Undergraduate Fellows Program, the college's honors and leadership initiative. Named for the University's longtime head football coach, Joe Paterno, and his wife, Sue, the Paterno Fellows Program is a landmark collaboration between the College of the Liberal Arts and the Schreyer Honors College, offering "an education for leadership" to students who accept the "Paterno challenge." The Paterno Liberal Arts Undergraduate Fellows Program, an honors and leadership program for Liberal Arts students, continues to grow with nearly 130 students who have passed the academic bar to become Fellows and members of the Schreyer Honors College. These students aspire to the kind of high achievement, values, and integrity associated with the Paterno family name. Liberal arts college names associate dean for undergraduate education

Chris Long, associate professor of philosophy, is the new associate dean for undergraduate education in the College of the Liberal Arts. He succeeds Jack Selzer, who is the inaugural director of the Paterno Liberal Arts Fellows Program, an honors and leadership program in the college now in its second year. (more)
