A Moroccan farmer taught Penn State students about the properties of vetiver grass, including its ability to clean wastewater. The grass could be used as part of a solution to water-quality problems being experienced in Assoul, Morocco, where students spent time recently.

Penn State's Homecoming clash with Northwestern is set for a noon kick on Oct. 6 in Beaver Stadium, the Nittany Lions' third announced start time for the 2012 season. The Big Ten Network, ESPN or ESPN2 will televise Penn State's 93rd Homecoming contest, with an announcement on the televising network likely 12 days before the game. (more)

The 15th-ranked Penn State women's soccer team hosts Nebraska on Friday at 8 p.m. Intercollegiate Athletics has released its parking advisory for Friday night in relation to the evening's Penn State Homecoming Parade and concert at Bryce Jordan Center. The 8 p.m. kick-off is an hour later than originally scheduled due to the parade. The parade will force some parking lots and road to close around the University Park campus. (more)

"Pride, Strength, Unity/Three Words, Two Colors, One Body" is the theme for Penn State York's homecoming set for Friday and Saturday, Oct. 21 and 22. Events take place beginning Friday with art shows, reunions, and an evening program, "Ice Cream with the Coaches," where people can enjoy Penn State Berkey Creamery ice cream and meet the coaches of Penn State York's athletic teams.

Beginning in the afternoon on Oct. 21, visitors can check out the artwork of Penn State York students on the lower level of the Pullo Family Performing Arts Center (The Pullo Center) and enjoy the photographs of Victoria Weaver's exhibit, "A Photographic Narrative of Mohegan Island, Maine," inside the Lee R. Glatfelter Library. Both exhibits can be viewed from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. Friday and then all day Saturday, Oct. 22.

Two reunions are set to take place from 5-7 p.m. Alumni who graduated in engineering will have the chance to network and tour the new Ralph G. and Madeline B. Swenson Engineering Center that opened in campus in August . Members of the Information Sciences and Technology Affiliated Society, will includes computer science and information sciences and technology graduates, will also gather and have the opportunity to make new friends and visit with old ones. If you like rock 'n' roll and 80s music, mark your calendar for Saturday, Oct. 22, when Velveeta (the band, not the cheese), will perform at 7 p.m. in the ballroom at Heritage Hills Golf Resort and Conference. Velveeta, a popular band from State College, Pa., will be doing a one-night performance as part of Penn State York's Homecoming weekend activities. Tickets are $15 in advance or $20 at the door. The Penn State vs. Northwestern football game will be displayed on two big screens during the event. (more)

As Penn State undergraduate students who also oversee highly active student organizations, they have had to develop time-management and leadership skills while maintaining their course loads. They offered insights into their organizations -- THON, Homecoming, the Student Programming Association (SPA) entertainment committee and the University Park Undergraduate Association (UPUA), respectively -- and their personal approaches to and recommendations for managing classes and extracurricular duties. Two students and two professors from the College of Engineering are part of the 2011 Homecoming court. Athena Abate and William Sheehan were both elected to the student court. Enrique Gomez and Paul Lynch were elected to the university court. Voting for the 2011 Homecoming king and queen will take place Oct. 10-14 during Homecoming week. (more)

Traffic, parking plans announced for homecoming parade

Penn State's University Park isn't know for rush-hour traffic, but on Friday, Aug. 24, it was the height of move-in weekend as students return for the beginning of classes. By Monday, more than 14,000 Penn State students will be settled in residence halls and University-owned apartments on campuses across the state. Traffic and parking plans have been announced for the annual Penn State Homecoming Parade, to take place beginning at 6 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 14, on the University Park campus and in downtown State College, Pa.

Beginning at 6 p.m. the parade route will be closed to traffic and parking along the route will be restricted. Motorists must remove vehicles parked on College Avenue prior to the parade. Penn State's Parking Office has identified parking lots that will be affected by the parade and has released a list of lots where parade-goers can park their vehicles. (more)

Football, cheerleaders, Berkey Creamery ice cream, tailgating.. all of the traditional elements are lined up for Penn State Abington's homecoming celebration on Saturday, Oct. 15. Participants can meet family and friends at Abington's Nittany Lion shrine and savor a scoop of ice cream from Penn State's creamery while exploring the arts and crafts marketplace on Sutherland Plaza. Participants can have their photo taken with the Nittany Lion mascot, and face painting will be available for youth. (more)
