Marlene Guers, interim director of Academic Affairs and senior instructor in mathematics at Penn State Hazleton, died Nov. 19 at her home after a brief illness. An instructor since 1981, Guers served the students and faculty in a variety of positions in addition to teaching a variety of mathematics courses, including coordinator of the campus honors program and part-time faculty coordinator. More than $1.7 million has been invested over the last three years in upgrades to Penn State Hazleton. Projects have included improvements to infrastructure, landscaping, signage and other efforts to enhance the look and feel of the campus. The Greater Hazleton Chamber of Commerce recently recognized these efforts by awarding Penn State Hazleton with the 2010 Pride of Place award. Monica Eve Gregory, director of Academic Affairs at Penn State Hazleton, died Sept. 27, at her home following an extended illness. She joined Penn State Hazleton in 1988 as assistant professor of psychology and was promoted to associate professor in 1994. She became director of Academic Affairs in March 1998, after serving as acting director starting in July 1996. In her position, she was responsible for faculty initiatives, faculty hiring and mentoring, and campus academic programs. (more)
Penn State researchers will receive $129 million over the next five years from several federal sources, including the Department of Energy, and an additional $30 million from Pennsylvania to develop ways to make buildings more energy efficient. The funds will create an Energy Innovation Hub at the Philadelphia Navy Yard, which will involve a substantial number of researchers from academe, the private sector and two national laboratories in a concerted effort to save energy, cut carbon pollution and position the United States at the forefront of the industry. With the scope of campus safety and security becoming more complex across the nation, Penn State undertook an analysis of 21 of its 24 campuses to assess each location's emergency preparedness and response capabilities. Penn State's 19 Commonwealth campuses as well as the Dickinson School of Law in Carlisle, Pa., and the Great Valley campus are all part of the University's ongoing examination of emergency operations. With hundreds of nominees, it's a rare occasion when two people from the same campus department take home an award two years in a row. However, this year, Sandra Wagner took the Penn State Commission for Women, Achieving Women Award home to Hazleton just as Mary Anne Enama did a year ago. (more)
