Mike Rybar made final adjustments to the Penn State Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineering teams Goldberg machine prior to the 2012 Rube Goldberg competition held on Feb. 11 at Penn State's Nittany Lion Inn. Rybar and his team created a musically themed machine that needed to complete a simple task (inflate a balloon) in twenty or more elaborate steps. The annual competition is named for cartoonist Rube Goldberg who created famous artwork depicting overly complicated machines doing everyday tasks.

ArcelorMittal Steelton and the United Steelworkers Local 1688, in partnership with Penn State Harrisburg and Penn State York, recently launched Steelworker for the Future in Central Pennsylvania. Steelworker for the Future is an associate degree program, along with advanced industrial credit certificates, designed to prepare students for high-tech, well-paying careers in the steel or manufacturing industry. An upcoming community forum at Penn State Harrisburg will discuss understanding and reporting child abuse. The event is free and open to the public.

The event will be held from 11:50 a.m. to 1:20 p.m. on Jan. 31, in the Morrison Gallery in the campus' library. "Understanding and Reporting Child Abuse" will provide information on -- and the opportunity to discuss -- understanding, reporting and preventing child abuse and neglect, and how these issues affect the campus community. As a new mom, Christie Fugate admits, she didn't know what "normal" was. "You get all this stuff at your baby shower, (and) you don't know how you're supposed to get it installed," she said. So Christie was grateful to learn about Penn State Hershey Children's Hospital's Pediatric Injury Prevention Program, which taught her how to properly install her baby's car seat.
