New graduates of Penn State's Eberly College of Science listened to the commencement address provided by United States Secretary of Energy Steven Chu during spring 2012 graduation ceremonies held May 5 at the Bryce Jordan Center on the University Park campus.

A Moroccan farmer taught Penn State students about the properties of vetiver grass, including its ability to clean wastewater. The grass could be used as part of a solution to water-quality problems being experienced in Assoul, Morocco, where students spent time recently.

The HUB-Robeson Galleries will showcase "Hateful Things," a traveling exhibit from Ferris State University's Jim Crow Museum. The exhibit will be open in the HUB Gallery from Jan. 18 to Feb. 26. This exhibit was made possible through the contribution of the Paul Robeson Cultural Center and the University Park Allocation Committee. (more)

HUB Parking Deck to remain open June 10-13

The HUB Parking Deck on the University Park campus will remain open this weekend (June 10-13), the Penn State Parking Office has announced. The previously planned closure is no longer necessary. Until improvements to Shortlidge Road are completed on Aug. 1, access to the HUB Deck will be from Pollock Road only. (more)

Uncertainty of state funds forces hold on projects

Penn State trustees today (March 18) put a hold on all new building projects due to uncertainty in the appropriation the University may receive from the Commonwealth. Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Corbett has proposed more than $660 million in cuts to public institutions of higher education. The cuts proposed for Penn State alone represent a decrease of $182 million, or 52.4 percent, in state funding for next year. In an unprecedented move, the Board of Trustees opted to endorse the architectural selections for projects under consideration, but postponed final authorization for any capital projects to proceed until the funding picture becomes more clear, according to Al Horvath, senior vice president for finance and business. Students, faculty and staff returning to the University Park campus for the start of spring semester classes today (Jan. 10) will see the first visible signs of progress on the Biobehavioral Health Building construction site since the construction fencing went up back in October. The bridge connecting Henderson Building and Henderson Building South has been demolished -- a step necessary before construction on the new building could begin. (more)

Education information session for employees is set for Sept. 25

Penn State Continuing and Distance Education, Student Affairs, and Undergraduate Admissions are hosting an information session for Penn State employees at the University Park campus from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 25, in the HUB-Robeson Center Auditorium to provide information about using their Employee Tuition Reduction benefit to take Penn State courses. This benefit provides eligible faculty, staff and retirees with opportunities to take courses at reduced fees. Employees may bring their lunches to the event. (more)

Penn State's classes of 2005 and 2007 have graduated and moved on. However, they are still making an imprint on their alma mater -- literally. Construction began this summer on each class' senior gift to the University, both campus improvement projects: The Celebration Garden at Rec Hall and the HUB/Robeson Center Sesquicentennial Commemorative Piece. Movin' On, a free all-day concert and the largest student-run music festival, took place on the HUB-Robeson Center lawn on Saturday, April 22.
