A multimedia performance of "King's Dream" will be held at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 18, in the Ostermayer Room of the Student Community Center at Penn State Greater Allegheny. The performance is a tribute to the life and teachings of Martin Luther King Jr. Key Arts Productions uses songs, live narrative and powerful film footage in this presentation of what led to an era of social unrest in America during the turbulent 1960s. Douglas Charles, assistant professor of history at Penn State Greater Allegheny, has been in the news recently with the release of the new movie about J.Edgar Hoover (J. Edgar, 2011). Charles specializes in the history of the FBI, about which he has written two books and several articles. (more)

An anonymous donor has made a $2.2 million estate commitment to Penn State Greater Allegheny. The bequest will institute a scholarship fund, two professorships and a chancellor's excellence fund.
"This commitment is a tremendous gift to the campus," said Curtiss E. Porter, chancellor of Penn State Greater Allegheny. "It is historic in its size and scope, as well as in the impact it will have on our students, faculty and community. Private philanthropy is a major driving force behind the growth and enhancement of our campus. Gifts from alumni and friends allow us to fulfill Penn State Greater Allegheny's mission to care for the success of our students and communities." (more)

Students from Penn State Greater Allegheny's Student Government Association are gearing up for the fifth annual Kids' Trick-or-Treat event. The event invites area children in kindergarten through third grade to the campus, where they can collect all the candy they want in a warm, indoor environment. Many area families look for the event each year as an alternative to traditional trick-or-treating. The event will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Oct. 31, in the campus' Student Community Center. (more)

Separating students by sex is an issue that has provoked much recent discussion. The recent move by the Pittsburgh Public Schools to convert Westinghouse High School into two single gender academies is just one example.
Penn State Greater Allegheny psychology professor Margaret L. Signorella has co-edited a recently published special issue of the journal Sex Roles addressing single-sex schooling (2011, volume 65, number 9-10). The collection of papers in Sex Roles shows no consistent advantages to single-sex education and also highlights the methodological difficulties in making conclusions about the impact of single-sex schooling. Penn State's Talent Search program, administered by the Office of the Vice Provost for Educational Equity, has received more than $3.2 million in grant funding from the U.S. Department of Education. The program, which serves more than 1,550 Pennsylvania students in sixth to 12th grade each year, seeks to increase the number of low-income and first-generation college students.
Funding was received in the form of two five-year grants, both of which will run from Sept. 1, 2011, to Aug. 31, 2016. The first program, totaling $2.1 million, will work with students in the Aliquippa, Clairton, Farrell, New Castle, New Kensington-Arnold and Sharon school districts in western Pennsylvania. The second program, totaling $1.1 million, will work with the York City School District and New Hope Academy Charter School. (more)

Members of the faculty and staff at Penn State Greater Allegheny will welcome first-year students and their families to campus during the annual academic convocation, beginning at 11 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 19. The convocation celebrates the campus' long and committed partnership with the Pittsburgh region. Since its beginning at the current location in 1957, the Greater Allegheny campus continues to play a dynamic role in the greater Pittsburgh area, bringing the resources of a nationally prominent university to students of all ages. Incoming freshmen at Penn State Greater Allegheny honed their academic skills in engineering, mathematics, English composition and physics this summer at the campus. The Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) summer bridge program ran throughout the month of July and prepared students for the fall semester. (more)
