A Moroccan farmer taught Penn State students about the properties of vetiver grass, including its ability to clean wastewater. The grass could be used as part of a solution to water-quality problems being experienced in Assoul, Morocco, where students spent time recently.

Penn State President Graham Spanier was a guest speaker today (Oct. 24) at the Pennsylvania Press Club in Harrisburg, where he talked to a large crowd about the benefits of a complex research university -- such as Penn State -- to innovation, job growth, the economy and well-being of the Commonwealth and its citizens. More than 30 million people suffer from migraine headaches in the United States each year. Penn State President Graham Spanier and his guests, Stephen Ross and Ryan Ridenour, will discuss symptoms, triggers and treatment options for migraines on the upcoming edition of "To the Best of My Knowledge." The Big Ten Conference office announced that Indiana University President Michael McRobbie will begin his second year as the chair of the Council of Presidents/Chancellors (COP/C). McRobbie will be joined on the COP/C Executive Committee for the 2011-12 academic year by University of Iowa President Sally Mason as vice chair, along with two past chairs in Michigan State University President Lou Anna K. Simon and Penn State University President Graham Spanier. These four individuals will also serve as the Executive/Compensation Committee for the Big Ten Conference. (more)

Five major issues are challenging America's land-grant universities, according to Penn State President Graham Spanier and echoed by conference leaders and presenters at The Legacy and the Promise: 150 Years of Land-Grant Universities, which concluded June 24 at Penn State. As land-grant institutions review their collective history to prepare for the 150th anniversary in 2012 of the Morrill Land-Grant College Act, they also address questions of weakening state support as well as varying interpretations of the land-grant mission. American land-grant colleges and universities -- beneficiaries of the federal Morrill Land-Grant College Act of 1862 -- are turning their attention to the transformational legislation as its 150th anniversary approaches in 2012. Penn State is initiating the conversation June 22-24 by hosting a national conference focused on land-grant universities' history and impact. (more)

New Penn State Basketball coach Patrick Chambers was introduced to a large and enthusiastic crowd Monday (June 6) in the Bryce Jordan Center. Named the 12th head coach in the 115 years of Nittany Lion Basketball on June 3, Chambers was introduced to Nittany Nation live on the Big Ten Network and www.BTN.com. A crowd of approximately 200 was in attendance in the Bryce Jordan Center. Penn State President Graham Spanier and Director of Athletics Tim Curley also participated in the press conference as the Penn State and State College communities welcomed Coach Chambers and his immediate and extended family in attendance, many of whom live in metropolitan Philadelphia.
