J. Franklin Egan, doctoral candidate in ecology, is the recipient of the 2012 Intercollege Graduate Student Outreach Achievement Award. This award recognizes outstanding achievements of degree candidates in any of the Intercollege Graduate Degree Programs that relate to bringing their scholarship to the community in order to benefit society in some manner. The award also endeavors to encourage future scholars and researchers to embrace outreach and promote a commitment to advancing the welfare and quality of life for the public through scholarly pursuits. Thirteen graduate students received the Penn State Alumni Association Dissertation Awards this spring in recognition of their outstanding achievement in scholarship and professional accomplishments. These awards provide funding to full-time doctoral students who have passed their comprehensive exams and have received approval of their dissertation topics, or to master of fine arts students in their final year. Forty-six graduate students were recognized and received awards for their presentations in the 27th Annual Graduate Exhibition, held March 23 and 25 on Penn State's University Park campus. The Graduate Exhibition places special emphasis on communicating research and creative endeavor to a general audience and offers a unique opportunity for professional development by challenging graduate students to present their work in clear, comprehensible terms to people outside their fields of study. More than 250 graduate students participated in the competition, which includes performances and research and visual arts presentations. The Graduate Exhibition, a showcase of musical and theatrical performances, cutting-edge research, and visual arts presented by Penn State's graduate students, will open with performances at 7 p.m. Friday, March 23, at Esber Recital Hall in Music Building I on the Penn State University Park campus. On Sunday, March 25, nearly 250 graduate students will present their research in the Alumni and Heritage Halls at the HUB-Robeson Center and 10 students for whom creating studio work is a required part of their degree program will present their works of art in the HUB Gallery. Jon M. Lozano, a candidate for a juris doctor degree from the Dickinson School of Law and master of education in the College Student Affairs program, has been honored with the 2012 Graduate Student Service Award. The award, established in 1991, recognizes a graduate student who has best combined high academic achievement with leadership in University or other public activities. (more)
Ten Penn State graduate students have been recognized with the 2012 Harold F. Martin Graduate Assistant Outstanding Teaching Awards. The award recipients are Serge Ballif, mathematics; Brandy Brown, French; Aaron Heresco, mass communications; Nicole Laliberte, geography; Gregory Lankenau, geography; Alexandra Nutter-Smith, mass communications; Sara Roser-Jones, kinesiology; Sarah Salter, English; Christopher Schulte, art education; and April Woolnough, crime, law and justice. The Office of the Vice President and Dean of the Graduate School and the Office of the Vice President and Dean for Undergraduate Education co-sponsor the awards to recognize excellence in teaching by graduate students. Recipients must have served as a graduate assistant for at least two semesters within the last two years. The award is named for Harold F. Martin, who earned his doctoral degree in education in 1954 and retired as a director in the Pennsylvania Department of Education. (more)
Graduate students interested in participating in the 27th annual Graduate Exhibition are encouraged to attend an information session on "How to Create an Exhibition Poster," from 5:15 to 6:45 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 7, in 112 Kern Graduate Building. The session will include a presentation on the mechanics of creating a poster for the exhibition, including organization, imagery, and printing and panel discussions by past winners and previous judges. Penn State is host to 21 new National Science Foundation (NSF) Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) recipients in 2011-12. These students join 28 prior recipients continuing in the University's graduate degree programs in the Eberly College of Science and the Colleges of Agricultural Sciences, Earth and Mineral Sciences, Engineering, Health and Human Development, Information Sciences and Technology, and the Liberal Arts, as well as the Intercollege Graduate Degree Programs. The NSF program supports outstanding graduate students in science, technology, engineering, STEM education and learning research, and mathematics disciplines who are pursuing research-based master's and doctoral degrees.
