A Moroccan farmer taught Penn State students about the properties of vetiver grass, including its ability to clean wastewater. The grass could be used as part of a solution to water-quality problems being experienced in Assoul, Morocco, where students spent time recently.

Penn State's University Park campus is now one of the first universities available for virtual walk-throughs using the Street View feature of Google Maps. Google Street View visited the campus with the Google "Trike" three times from October 2008 through August 2009 to collect 360-degree digital imagery around a majority of University Park's high-traffic sidewalks, as well as a special trip through the Nittany Lions' tunnel and onto the turf of Beaver Stadium. Now Web users nearly anywhere can see what it looks like to enter the stadium from the perspective of a Nittany Lion football player or Blue Band member, take a stroll down the Pattee Mall, sit on the steps of Old Main and visit the Bryce Jordan Center. Three groups of Penn State students placed in the top 15 teams in the 2009 Google Online Marketing Challenge, an online advertising competition sponsored by Google. The student teams competed in the challenge as part of a keyword marketing course taught by Jim Jansen, associate professor in the College of Information Sciences and Technology (IST). (more)

Penn State sends first Google shipment

Penn State University Libraries is sending its first shipment of books to Google this month to be digitized as part of the CIC/Google Book Search project. Among the volumes are Penn State's distinctive English and American literature collections. When complete, the multi-year project will have digitized upwards of 10 million books from the collections of the Committee on Institutional Cooperation (CIC), the academic arm of the Big Ten Conference. Information Technology Services (ITS) will migrate the Penn State Google Search Appliance (GSA) from its current configuration to a newer type of "load-balanced" hardware on Thursday, Feb. 5, during the regularly scheduled maintenance window (5 to 7 a.m.). In addition, this new hardware will be updated with a newer version of the Google Search Appliance software (version 5). During the upgrade, it is expected that search.psu.edu will experience intermittent outages. (more)

Cultural historian, media scholar and author Siva Vaidhyanathan will present "The Googlization of Everything," from 10 to 11:30 a.m. April 11 in Foster Auditorium, 101 Pattee Library, University Park. Vaidhyanathan is associate professor of media studies and law at the University of Virginia and is the author of "Copyrights and Copywrongs: The Rise of Intellectual Property and How it Threatens Creativity" (New York University Press, 2001) and "The Anarchist in the Library: How the Clash between Freedom and Control is Hacking the Real World and Crashing the System" (Basic Books, 2004). IST, communications, business students partner for Google challenge

Penn State students are among more than 20,000 worldwide competing in the Google Online Marketing Challenge -- something Google calls the largest global education initiative. The project, led by IST Assistant Professor Jim Jansen, brings together students from IST, the College of Communications and the Smeal College of Business to work on building advertising campaigns for State College-area businesses. Creating and monitoring these campaigns allows these students to gain real-world experience in the emerging field of e-marketing while building relationships with the community. (more)
