New graduates of Penn State's Eberly College of Science listened to the commencement address provided by United States Secretary of Energy Steven Chu during spring 2012 graduation ceremonies held May 5 at the Bryce Jordan Center on the University Park campus.

A Moroccan farmer taught Penn State students about the properties of vetiver grass, including its ability to clean wastewater. The grass could be used as part of a solution to water-quality problems being experienced in Assoul, Morocco, where students spent time recently.

The disease known as Elm yellows threatens the health of over 200 majestic American elms on the Penn State campus. Elm yellows is just one of many tree diseases that contribute to the decline and death of trees in the United States. Determining how to save Penn State's elm trees is an ongoing collaboration between University researchers and groundskeepers. Capturing disease-carrying insects to study them has been an elusive task, but researchers believe existing efforts to prevent Dutch elm disease may be a clue to keeping the landmark trees safe from elm yellows.
