A Moroccan farmer taught Penn State students about the properties of vetiver grass, including its ability to clean wastewater. The grass could be used as part of a solution to water-quality problems being experienced in Assoul, Morocco, where students spent time recently.

More than 3,100 veteran and active-duty military students are using their Post-9/11 GI Bill benefits to earn degrees at Penn State as of spring 2011, a 21 percent increase over last year. As more troops return from Iraq and Afghanistan, this enrollment trend is likely to continue. To help faculty and staff who work with these students better understand and support their needs, a University-wide team has created five Best Practices in the Recruitment and Retention of Student Veterans programs. More military veterans and active-duty military members are choosing Penn State as their education provider. As of spring 2011, there were 3,166 students using their Post 9/11 G.I. Bill benefits throughout the University system -- an increase of 21 percent over 2010. With the planned drawdown of troops in Iraq and Afghanistan, the number of these students will likely continue to increase at all Penn State campuses. A series of free professional development webinars, developed by a University-wide team in collaboration with the Human Resource Development Center, is being offered to staff members who assist these students with admissions, advising, financial aid, outreach, psychological and disabilities services. Fully qualified U.S. veterans who have served on active duty since Sept. 11, 2001, and who currently attend or wish to attend Penn State can have their tuition costs covered at nearly every Penn State campus and for nearly every degree offered by the University, thanks to the U.S. government's Yellow Ribbon Program, part of the Post 9/11 GI Bill. College to host information session for Post-9/11 GI Bill benefits

Pennsylvania College of Technology will host an information session on May 4 for education benefits associated with the Post-9/11 GI Bill-Chapter 33. Topics to be discussed include the amount of funding assistance available for tuition and fees, the basic housing allowance, and books and supplies. Eligibility requirements/criteria also will be addressed. A question-and-answer period will follow. (more)

Learn more about the programs being offered in Hanover by Penn State York during an information session from 6 - 8 p.m. on Tuesday, April 7, at the Hanover Wellness and Education Center, 400 York Street, Hanover. The program is free and open to the public.

Penn State York is offering credit courses in Hanover and learners may take a course, complete a credit certificate, take courses toward the bachelor of science in business (BSB) degree, or take college courses while in high school. (more)

Reception to honor military service of students, alumni, faculty/staff

Pennsylvania College of Technology will hold a reception to honor current and former students, alumni, faculty and staff serving in the armed forces. During the April 14 event, a banner signed by current students and alumni serving with the Pennsylvania National Guard in Afghanistan will be presented to the college administration. The education benefits of the Post-9/11 GI Bill also will be discussed. (more)
