New graduates of Penn State's Eberly College of Science listened to the commencement address provided by United States Secretary of Energy Steven Chu during spring 2012 graduation ceremonies held May 5 at the Bryce Jordan Center on the University Park campus.

A Moroccan farmer taught Penn State students about the properties of vetiver grass, including its ability to clean wastewater. The grass could be used as part of a solution to water-quality problems being experienced in Assoul, Morocco, where students spent time recently.

Independence Day celebrations almost always include fireworks of some kind. The Prevent Blindness America organization recommends attending professionally organized fireworks displays rather than buying and setting off your own. This view is echoed by the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), which collects and reports data on fireworks-related injuries every year. They report that 7,000 emergency room visits from fireworks-related injuries occurred during 2008, including seven deaths. In 2007, there were 11 deaths and 9,800 emergency room visits from fireworks-related injury. (more)

Abington conducts unofficial political survey in honor of July Fourth

In anticipation of our nation's fast approaching birthday celebration, Penn State Abington recently conducted a "nonscientific" survey on people's general knowledge of the Declaration of Independence. The results showed that Americans need to brush up on their civic knowledge. (more)

In Central Pennsylvania, America's independence is honored with a whole day of family fun, followed in the evening by what the Travel Channel recently called "one of the best fireworks displays in the world." The region's annual Fourth of July celebration, Central PA 4th Fest, is supported entirely by volunteers and donations. Held on Saturday, July 4, 4th Fest is hosted by Penn State outside the Bryce Jordan Center and kicks off at 9 a.m. with the Firecracker 4K Race on campus. (more)
