A Moroccan farmer taught Penn State students about the properties of vetiver grass, including its ability to clean wastewater. The grass could be used as part of a solution to water-quality problems being experienced in Assoul, Morocco, where students spent time recently.

Penn State alumni William and Jeri Simon have established the Simon Family Trustee Scholarship in the Penn State Smeal College of Business. With gift-matching funds from the H.J. Heinz foundation, a nonprofit organization that supports charitable giving by all H.J. Heinz Co. employees, the endowment will be valued at $50,000, and its impact will be doubled with support from the University's Trustee Matching Scholarship Program. William Simon is vice president, R&D operations, at H.J. Heinz Co. in Pittsburgh. He has been with Heinz since earning his M.B.A. from Smeal in 1994. He also holds a bachelor's degree in marketing from Smeal, where he graduated in 1989. Jeri Simon is a 1990 graduate of Smeal with a bachelor's degree in management. She is a history teacher at the Ellis School, an independent girls' school in Pittsburgh. (more)

Penn State's College of Information Sciences and Technology (IST) has received a $400,000 gift -- the largest from a graduate in its 13-year history -- from San Francisco CEO and IST alumnus David Rusenko. The gift will create the David Rusenko Scholarship for Entrepreneurship, which will help IST students to launch their own companies while they are still in school.

"IST has done a tremendous job creating well-rounded technical graduates," said Rusenko, a 2007 graduate and co-founder of San Francisco firm Weebly. "I'm excited to help encourage students to think seriously about creating and joining startups." (more)

Penn State alumnus Louis Gatto and his wife, Katherine Gatto, have committed $100,000 to establish the Gatto Trustee Scholarship in the Smeal College of Business. With support from the University's Trustee Matching Scholarship Program, the gift's impact will be doubled, effectively resulting in the equivalent of a $200,000 scholarship fund for undergraduates with financial need who are studying abroad. Laura L. Rothkopf, widow of Michael H. Rothkopf, Smeal Chaired Professor of Supply Chain and Information Systems, has committed $334,000 to establish the Michael H. and Laura L. Rothkopf Early Career Professorship in Supply Chain Management in the Penn State Smeal College of Business. With matching funds from the Penn State Faculty Endowment Challenge, the total endowment is worth $500,000. The first recipient of the Rothkopf Early Career Professorship is Christopher Craighead. Penn State alumna Lizabeth Zlatkus has committed $50,000, which includes employer funds donated in her honor, to establish the Lizabeth Herbst Zlatkus Trustee Scholarship in the Penn State Smeal College of Business. With support from the University's Trustee Matching Scholarship Program, the gift's impact will be doubled, effectively resulting in the equivalent of a $100,000 scholarship fund for undergraduates with financial need. Zlatkus, a 1981 graduate of Smeal with a bachelor's degree in accounting, is the retired executive vice president and chief risk officer of The Hartford Financial Services Group, Inc. (more)

$1 million pledge jump-starts Wilkes-Barre Career Services Center

Plans are under way for a new Career Services Center at Penn State Wilkes-Barre that will provide students with comprehensive career planning and job seeking services. A major matching gift from Wilkes-Barre alumnus Richard K. "Ric" Struthers and his wife, Sharon, has jump-started the campus' fundraising effort to support the project.

The Struthers have pledged $1 million to Penn State Wilkes-Barre. Their gift will match 50 percent of the cost to build and furnish the new Career Services Center, up to a total commitment of $500,000. The remainder of their commitment will be split with $250,000 going to create the Struthers Family Trustee Scholarship supporting students at Penn State Wilkes-Barre with need. The additional $250,000 will go into an endowment by the Struthers Family, annually supporting the operational expenses of the new Career Services Center. (more)

Penn State alumni Cynthia Ade and Jeffrey Perrone have established the Cynthia Ade and Jeffrey Perrone Trustee Scholarship in the Penn State Smeal College of Business. With gift-matching funds from the Deloitte Foundation, a not-for-profit organization affiliated with Perrone's employer, Deloitte, the endowment will be valued at $125,000, and its impact will also be doubled with support from the University's Trustee Matching Scholarship Program. The scholarship will be awarded annually to support students with financial need who represent minority populations. (more)

On Thursday, Oct. 13, Penn State Wilkes-Barre honored 106 students who were awarded scholarships for the 2011-12 school year at the annual Scholarship Dinner held at Appletree Terrace. This year, Penn State Wilkes-Barre awarded 265 students approximately $730,000 in scholarships. (more)
