A Penn State Tumblr blog launched this winter showcases for a young audience the University's research and teaching in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields. Big Black Glasses gears its content and design to a pre-college crowd. With a name that highlights Tumblr-trending topics such as "geek chic" and "nerdy swag," the blog features University research in a boldly visual manner. Regularly updated with current material, it uses dynamic images, short animations and intriguing STEM subjects that intersect with pop culture. Drawing from the rich resources of Penn State research, Big Black Glasses also features NASA, Scientific American, Wired Magazine and other scientific sources. (more)

Kelly M. Austin, vice president of finance and administration at the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown, has been named the new chancellor at Penn State Schuylkill, effective June 1. He replaces previous Schuylkill chancellor R. Keith Hillkirk, who moved to the same role at Penn State Berks in 2011. Stephen Couch, director of academic affairs, has served as interim chancellor since July. "Dr. Austin brings exceptional leadership experience to Penn State Schuylkill," said Madlyn Hanes, vice president for Commonwealth Campuses. "His accomplished service in senior administrative roles -- most notably in finance and business operations, academic and student support and community relations -- speaks to his broad expertise." Penn State's University Park community honors the life and work of Martin Luther King, Jr. with a simple yet powerful message to "Stand Up!" during its 27th annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemoration. The commemoration will be highlighted by a performance by Barry Scott, an authority on the life and works of King whose one-man play "Ain't Got Long to Stay Here" dramatizes the Civil Rights era. Scott recreates numerous figures of the era, capturing differing opinions and personalities that King faced. He will perform at 7 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 16 at Eisenhower Auditorium. Journalist and social activist Jeff Johnson will be keynote speaker for the Evening Celebration scheduled for 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 18 at Schwab Auditorium. Johnson is an award-winning journalist and commentator in national media who is committed to fostering broad-based communication about issues of race, politics, popular culture and socioeconomics.
