New graduates of Penn State's Eberly College of Science listened to the commencement address provided by United States Secretary of Energy Steven Chu during spring 2012 graduation ceremonies held May 5 at the Bryce Jordan Center on the University Park campus.

A Moroccan farmer taught Penn State students about the properties of vetiver grass, including its ability to clean wastewater. The grass could be used as part of a solution to water-quality problems being experienced in Assoul, Morocco, where students spent time recently.

Daniel R. Hagen, immediate past-chair of the University Faculty Senate, reported to the Board of Trustees Friday (May 4) on the activities of the Senate for the 2011-12 academic year. Hagen noted that the year was "likely to be remembered as one of the most unusual and stressful Senate years ever," because of the issues surrounding the child sexual abuse allegations surrounding Jerry Sandusky, a former Penn State assistant coach. In response to the Sandusky scandal, the Senate held several special meetings this past year, he reported. In addition, the administration and the Senate officers agreed to increase the frequency of meetings of the Faculty Advisory Committee to the University president. (more)

Penn State's University Faculty Senate on Tuesday, Jan. 24, voted against two motions related to the University's Board of Trustees. Senators voted against a motion to form a special committee with a majority of members who are independent of the University that would have investigated the Board of Trustees' oversight role. The Senate also voted against a vote of no confidence in the board. (more)

For the first time as president of Penn State, Rodney Erickson on Tuesday (Dec. 6) delivered remarks to the University Faculty Senate, discussing events of the past month that have put the University in the headlines. His remarks were followed by questions from Senators and a forensic session to discuss a resolution passed on Nov. 18 addressing issues stemming from the child sex abuse charges against Jerry Sandusky and charges of perjury against two administrators.
