For the first time since Penn State's FTCAP student orientation program began fifty years ago, measurable data collected from students are immediately available because all now submit their answers via hand-held "clickers," or student response systems. (more)

This summer, approximately 1,000 first-year students who will begin their studies in the fall semester will get a preview of what college life will be like through the Penn State Berks First-Year Testing, Counseling, and Advising Program (FTCAP) from June 23 to July 17. (more)

Students that want to enhance their leadership skills and be among the first to welcome the newest members of our Penn State community should consider applying to be a First-Year Testing, Consulting, and Advising Program's (FTCAP) leader. Applications for student leaders to assist with the academic orientation session are now available. Student leaders will make connections with first-year students and help them understand Penn State's academic environment and campus community. (more)

The Division of Undergraduate Studies is preparing for the summer 2009 First-Year Testing, Consulting, and Advising Program (FTCAP) and invites current students to help by developing short YouTube videos about lessons learned during FTCAP or general advice for incoming first-year students. Entries may feature a favorite Penn State tradition, tips for the first year on campus, how best to prepare for FTCAP, or other ideas to help new students. The most useful, creative and well-done videos will be included in FTCAP material used this year, and winning students will receive prizes. The deadline is midnight on March 31. Penn State is dedicated to using the most innovative tools and programs to address students' emotional and academic needs. In an informational report to the University's Board of Trustees Friday, Nov. 21, Damon Sims, vice president for Student Affairs, led a panel discussion on new initiatives in the areas of emotional wellness and academic expectations.
The panel discussion focused on "Worrisome Student Behaviors: Minimizing Risk," a video series addressing concerns about potentially violent or disturbing behaviors. Panelists also tackled the topic of Penn State's long-standing student advising and registration program, the First-Year Testing, Counseling and Advising Program (FTCAP). (more)
