The Center for the Performing Arts Classical Music Project -- soon to begin its second season -- demonstrates the music of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Ludwig van Beethoven and other classical composers is alive and well in the 21st century. The three-year Classical Music Project, supported by a $470,000 grant from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation plus an additional $317,000 from various Penn State partners, provides unprecedented opportunities to connect students, faculty and the community with classical music artists and programs. The Center for the Performing Arts at Penn State's 2012-2013 season of music, theater and dance presentations from around the world features the Centre County debut of the musical comedy The Addams Family, the touring Broadway shows Hair and Tap Dogs, Toronto's Opera Atelier in The Magic Flute, the return of Bela Fleck and Tony Trischka with an elite line-up of banjo buddies and the second season of a three-year journey through the string quartets of Ludwig van Beethoven. U.S. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack will visit Penn State on Wednesday, May 16, to deliver an address commemorating the 150th anniversary of the U.S. Department of Agriculture and highlighting the groundbreaking research and innovation that takes place at land-grant universities, such as Penn State. Vilsack's address will take place at 11 a.m. in Berg Auditorium (Room 100) in the Life Sciences Building on the University Park campus. The event is free and open to the public. (more)
Emergency personnel from Penn State and municipalities throughout the Centre Region will participate in a full-scale emergency response exercise at the University Park Airport from 6 to 9:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 23. The airport will be open and operating under a normal schedule during this drill. Traffic may be heavier than normal, however, so travelers should allow extra time to get to the airport. (more)
The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation has awarded a grant of $143,000 to Penn State to investigate how faculty create and manage personal information collections. Led by Associate Librarian Ellysa Stern Cahoy and Associate Professor of Science Education Scott McDonald, the 15-month ethnographic study will examine in detail how faculty save, share, cite and archive scholarly information. Free public gardening workshops will be a featured attraction when the Penn State Extension Master Gardeners of Centre County hold their annual Garden Fair and Plant Sale, May 19. The event will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the Ag Progress Days grounds at Rock Springs, nine miles southwest of State College on state Route 45. (more)
Several months ago, Huron Consulting reviewed the Direct Bill Authorization Form (DBAF) of travel services at Penn State. It recommended that the University eliminate the DBAF process for the purchase of airline tickets. This recommendation was made for two primary reasons. (more)

Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc. has become the first National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) fraternity or sorority to endow fully a scholarship at Penn State. The Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Delta Theta Alumni Association Scholarship, endowed with a $50,000 gift, will be awarded to students who are members in good standing of the Delta Theta Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity.
