Penn State's research expenditures in fiscal 2009 reached a record $765 million, a 6.7 percent increase over the previous year and a 74 percent increase since fiscal 2000, said Eva J. Pell, senior vice president for research and dean of the Graduate School, in a report to the University's Board of Trustees on Nov. 6. The funding supports a broad range of research activity in such diverse areas as renewable energy, cybersecurity, materials science and engineering, environmental science, and translational medicine. Penn State reports a record $717 million in research funding for 2007-2008, ranking the University among top universities nationwide. Such a vibrant enterprise plays a key role in finding solutions to public problems and growing the economies in Pennsylvania and the nation, according to the University. (more)

Twenty-one Penn State graduate school programs rank among the top 10 in the nation, with others also recognized among the best in the country in U.S. News & World Report's "America's Best Graduate Schools," announced March 28. The publication is dated April 7 and is already available on newsstands. "It's gratifying to see so many of our graduate programs continue to be recognized for their outstanding work," said Eva Pell, senior vice president for research and dean of The Graduate School. "While rankings may not be the only measure of success, it is encouraging to see Penn State's graduate education receive such well-earned recognition." (more)
