Mike Rybar made final adjustments to the Penn State Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineering teams Goldberg machine prior to the 2012 Rube Goldberg competition held on Feb. 11 at Penn State's Nittany Lion Inn. Rybar and his team created a musically themed machine that needed to complete a simple task (inflate a balloon) in twenty or more elaborate steps. The annual competition is named for cartoonist Rube Goldberg who created famous artwork depicting overly complicated machines doing everyday tasks.

This year will be a very good year for amateur astronomers, so much so that Darren Williams, associate professor of physics and astronomy at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, will offer a preview of its unique viewing opportunities at his next Open House Night in Astronomy. "2012: Year of the Planets" will take place at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, March 14, in Room 101 of the Otto Behrend Science Building. The nontechnical presentation is free and open to the public and will be followed by astronomical viewing from the college's Mehalso Observatory, weather permitting. (more)

In 1983, a small group of Michigan high school teachers adopted the ethos of varsity athletics-challenge, competition, teamwork, and reward--to encourage and inspire standards-based science education. From a grassroots movement to a national presence with 6,200 teams in 50 states, Science Olympiad has since grown into the premiere science competition in the nation.

On Monday, March 5, Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, will host the regional Science Olympiad competition for the first time. Middle and high school teams from 24 northwestern Pennsylvania schools will spend the day on campus to compete in individual and team events in the fields of biology, earth science, chemistry, engineering, physics and computing in hopes of becoming one of the 120 teams to qualify for the 2012 National Tournament to be held at University of Central Florida in May.
