This year will be a very good year for amateur astronomers, so much so that Darren Williams, associate professor of physics and astronomy at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, will offer a preview of its unique viewing opportunities at his next Open House Night in Astronomy. "2012: Year of the Planets" will take place at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, March 14, in Room 101 of the Otto Behrend Science Building. The nontechnical presentation is free and open to the public and will be followed by astronomical viewing from the college's Mehalso Observatory, weather permitting. (more)

In 1983, a small group of Michigan high school teachers adopted the ethos of varsity athletics-challenge, competition, teamwork, and reward--to encourage and inspire standards-based science education. From a grassroots movement to a national presence with 6,200 teams in 50 states, Science Olympiad has since grown into the premiere science competition in the nation.
On Monday, March 5, Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, will host the regional Science Olympiad competition for the first time. Middle and high school teams from 24 northwestern Pennsylvania schools will spend the day on campus to compete in individual and team events in the fields of biology, earth science, chemistry, engineering, physics and computing in hopes of becoming one of the 120 teams to qualify for the 2012 National Tournament to be held at University of Central Florida in May. The Penn State Student Newspaper Readership Program, initiated in 1997 and now a nationwide model on college and university campuses, provides students with a broader perspective on global, national and local issues. It aims to enhance the learning environment on campus, increase students' knowledge of domestic and world events, and encourage a lifelong practice of daily newspaper readership. (more)

A social psychologist who studies stereotyping, prejudice and discrimination within the context of the criminal justice system will be the next speaker in the Colloquium Series in Psychological Sciences and Human Behavior at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College. Jennifer Hunt of Buffalo State University will speak at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 20, at Penn State Behrend, in the Reed Auditorium, located on the second floor of the Reed Union Building.
