New graduates of Penn State's Eberly College of Science listened to the commencement address provided by United States Secretary of Energy Steven Chu during spring 2012 graduation ceremonies held May 5 at the Bryce Jordan Center on the University Park campus.

A Moroccan farmer taught Penn State students about the properties of vetiver grass, including its ability to clean wastewater. The grass could be used as part of a solution to water-quality problems being experienced in Assoul, Morocco, where students spent time recently.

Student Stories: Environmental major interns with USDA

Looking to narrow her focus as an Environmental Resource Management major, Penn State senior Lisa Boudeman decided to spend last summer getting hands-on experience with the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Agricultural Research Service.

The Danville, Pa., native interned at USDA's Pasture Systems and Watershed Management Laboratory on the University Park campus. The lab works closely with the College of Agricultural Sciences on projects related to water quality and agricultural methods. (more)

Justin Kauffman let his love of hunting, fishing and the outdoors guide him to the right Penn State major and to a meaningful internship helping to protect natural resources. The York, Pa., native graduated from the College of Agricultural Sciences in December with a degree in Environmental Resource Management and a minor in Watersheds and Water Resources. He interned with the Conewago Creek Initiative, a collaboration between Penn State Extension and environmental groups aimed at improving water quality in the Conewago Creek watershed. (more)

A team of five students from the College of Engineering and the College of Agricultural Sciences won the 2011 Ag Business Springboard Competition. Students traveled to Benin, Africa, in May to get a first-hand look at how a village cooperative proceses baobab fruit. The team designed a machine they hope will increase the cooperative's productivity. The winning team was chosen on Nov. 14 out of five finalist groups and was awarded the $5,000 grand prize. (more)

When recent Penn State graduate Mary Susan Sherman applied for several internships through the National Park Service, she never dreamed she would co-develop the foundation for an Alaska-based weed-management program. Last summer, Sherman -- who now holds a degree in Environmental Resource Management from the College of Agricultural Sciences -- and another student intern were based in Coal Creek Camp in central Alaska near the Yukon River. Penn State alumna Victoria Kilbert dove head first into the job market and resurfaced in the Chesapeake Bay. Sort of.

After graduating from the College of Agricultural Sciences in 2008 with a degree in environmental resource management, Kilbert tried various jobs before arriving in Annapolis, Md., where she now works as part of a Chesapeake Bay Program water-quality implementation team. (more)

Christine Olarte, an environmental resource management major in Penn State's College of Agricultural Sciences, spent the ultimate white Christmas in the far southern latitudes last winter. For three weeks -- from Dec. 21, 2008, to Jan. 11 -- the current senior from Harrisburg enjoyed a once-in-a-lifetime Yuletide experience in the land of ice and snow. (more)

As Jenn Oliver will tell you, changing the wasteful energy-consumption habits of college students is a daunting task, but she tries every day. Oliver, a senior majoring in environmental resource management in the College of Agricultural Sciences, immersed herself in the promotional, conservation and research aspects of the Take Charge program during her 2008 internship with Penn State's Office of Physical Plant.
