New graduates of Penn State's Eberly College of Science listened to the commencement address provided by United States Secretary of Energy Steven Chu during spring 2012 graduation ceremonies held May 5 at the Bryce Jordan Center on the University Park campus.

A Moroccan farmer taught Penn State students about the properties of vetiver grass, including its ability to clean wastewater. The grass could be used as part of a solution to water-quality problems being experienced in Assoul, Morocco, where students spent time recently.

Improved security, the absence of electromagnetic interference, a solution to the current spectrum crunch and energy efficiency are a few of the topics that will be discussed at the first meeting of the Industry/University Cooperative Research Center on Optical Wireless Applications, a joint project of Penn State and the Georgia Institute of Technology funded by the National Science Foundation. The workshop will take place May 20-22 at the Nittany Lion Inn on Penn State's University Park campus. The workshop is free, but participants must register. Penn State, Moroccan students team up to improve the country's water

As part of the proposed solution to Assoul, Morroco's water problems, Penn State students designed a prototype flow-dependent chlorine injector to disinfect the village's water supply. The project was one of two involving cooperation among Penn State students and Moroccans.

A recent trip to Morocco allowed Penn State engineering leadership students to put theory into practice as they engaged in a cross-cultural collaboration with engineering students from Ecole Mohammadia d'Ingenueurs (EMI).

A combined group of 30 Penn State and EMI students traveled to the tiny village of Assoul, several hours' drive north of Rabat, the country's capital and home to EMI. There, the teams fanned out to study soil erosion in the hills surrounding Assoul, water contamination in a central village well and the need to efficiently disinfect the water supply to prevent illness. The issues faced by Assoul are emblematic of villages throughout the Kingdom. (more)

More than 1,000 slated to receive engineering degrees at commencement

Delivering this year's commencement address is Robert D. Bruce Logan, Kappe, professor of environmental engineering, was one of three Penn State faculty recently named an Evan Pugh Professor, joining a list of only 62 recognized since the title's inception in 1960. Evan Pugh Professorships are the highest honor the University bestows on its faculty. (more)
