New graduates of Penn State's Eberly College of Science listened to the commencement address provided by United States Secretary of Energy Steven Chu during spring 2012 graduation ceremonies held May 5 at the Bryce Jordan Center on the University Park campus.

A Moroccan farmer taught Penn State students about the properties of vetiver grass, including its ability to clean wastewater. The grass could be used as part of a solution to water-quality problems being experienced in Assoul, Morocco, where students spent time recently.

Online program offers certificate in teaching English abroad

Penn State Lehigh Valley's Office of Continuing Education is currently accepting enrollments for a new program in Teaching English as a Second Language Abroad (TESLA). This three-week online program provides a basic introduction to teaching English language learners (ELL) in foreign contexts. The program runs May 22-28, May 29-June 4 and June 5-11. (more)

Program trains speech-language teachers to aid immigrant children

Identifying and treating communication disorders in immigrant children is the focus of MOSAIC (Multiplying Opportunities for Services and Access for Immigrant Children), which will train future speech-language pathologists and other professionals to work with immigrant children who are learning to speak English as a second language (ESL). The program, funded by a $1 million grant from the U.S. Department of Education, will provide specialized training to 22 graduate students in Penn State's Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders over the next four years. Professor receives grant to study bilingual school readiness program

Carol Scheffner Hammer, associate professor of communication sciences and disorders in Penn State's College of Health and Human Development, was recently awarded a $500,000 Head Start-University Partnership Grant that studies the efficacy of a bilingual school-readiness program called Madres educando a sus ninos/Mothers Educating Their Children, a book-reading program that engages mothers through the Hispanic culture.
