The Penn State Board of Trustees on Jan. 20 selected seven Penn State alumni to receive the Distinguished Alumni Award, the University's highest award for an individual. The 2012 Distinguished Alumni are Norman W. Barton, Harold E. Cheatham, Peter J. Cocoziello, Earl K. Harbaugh, Joan Dawson McConnon, Robert D. Metzgar and Thomas J. Ridge. (more)
The Penn State Alumni Association is now accepting nominations for the 2012 Distinguished Alumni Award. Established by the University's Board of Trustees in 1951, the award is the highest honor that Penn State bestows upon an outstanding alumna or alumnus. The award salutes the achievements of outstanding alumni whose personal lives, professional achievements and community service exemplify the objectives of their alma mater. Nominations must be returned by Oct. 14. (more)

Three faculty members and one alumnus were honored in the lobby of Old Main on Sept. 16 in a special awards ceremony. At the ceremony, Judith Bond, Donald Hambrick and Thomas Mallouk became the newest Evan Pugh professors, joining a list of only 59 others thus recognized since the title's inception in 1960. Evan Pugh Professorships are the highest honor the University bestows on its faculty. Also at the ceremony, Jigmi Y. Thinley, prime minister of Bhutan, was honored as a Distinguished Alumnus. Benjamin P. Blasingame, a pioneer in the development of the U.S. Air Force's early Intercontinental Ballistic Missile Systems who was named a 1970 Distinguished Alumnus of Penn State, was inducted into the Air Force Space and Missile Hall of Fame on Aug. 11, at Peterson Air Force Base, Colorado Springs, Colo. He has made several lasting and significant contributions to Air Force Space and Missile programs, according to an Air Force spokesperson, and created the department of aeronautics and astronautics at the U.S. Air Force Academy. Former Penn State standout quarterback Todd Blackledge will be among eight recipients of the University's prestigious Distinguished Alumni Award today, Friday, June 5. The Penn State Board of Trustees announced earlier this year that Blackledge would be among the recipients of the University's highest individual honor. The Distinguished Alumni Award ceremony will be held Friday afternoon in the Nittany Lion Inn as part of Penn State's Traditional Reunion Weekend. (more)
Penn State Distinguished Alumnus Paul Levine's career history covers a spectrum of fields, from newspaper reporter, to trial lawyer, to law school teacher, to television writer, to his current full-time job, novelist. He has created several book series with well-known characters, starting with the linebacker turned hard-nosed lawyer Jake Lassiter, who features in seven books. In his latest book, "Illegal," Levine introduces readers to Jimmy (Royal) Payne, who Levine describes as a down-and-out L.A. lawyer who gets caught up in the "shadowy world of human trafficking and sexual slavery." Levine offers a first-person account of the inspiration behind his newest title. (more)

Penn State Distinguished Alumnus Charles Bierbauer is scheduled to speak 4 p.m. Friday (Feb. 27) in 102 Thomas Building, University Park, as part of the opening ceremony of the 2009 Penn State Model United Nations Conference. The speech -- which is sponsored by the Penn State International Affairs and Debate Association, the College of Communications, the College of the Liberal Arts and the Schreyer Honors College -- is free and open to the public.
