Theresa K. Musser, Division of Undergraduate Studies programs coordinator for Penn State's College of Agricultural Sciences, is the 2012 recipient of the Service to NACADA Award, which annually recognizes exceptional service to the National Academic Advising Association.
During 20 years of NACADA membership, Musser has made significant contributions to both the association and to the profession of academic advising. (more)
Last month the Division of Undergraduate Studies (DUS) launched the new Think Global website to help students learn about global issues; study those issues through related course work, majors and minors; and connect with resources leading to real-world involvement, both now and after graduation.
Under the leadership of Elena Galinova, senior undergraduate studies adviser in DUS, the Think Global initiative serves as a gateway and an accessible resource for students curious about the world and the role they might play in contributing to global change. Elena Galinova, senior undergraduate studies adviser in the Division of Undergraduate Studies, is the staff recipient of the 2012 W. LaMarr Kopp International Achievement Award. The award, established in 1995, recognizes faculty and staff members who have contributed significantly to the advancement of the international missions of the University. It is named for the late deputy vice president for international programs. (more)

The Division of Undergraduate Studies at Penn State introduced a new design for The Mentor: An Academic Advising Journal at http://dus.psu.edu/mentor last week, unveiling a fresh, contemporary look, user-friendly navigation system, a comment feature at the end of every article, and new "Graduate Corner" section designed to showcase the work of up-and-coming advising professionals. "Advising for the Global Community" is the theme of this year's professional development conference on academic advising, which takes place Thursday, Oct. 26, at The Penn Stater Conference Center Hotel on Penn State's University Park campus. The conference will focus on the value of incorporating global themes in undergraduate studies, teaching students to develop global interests in and out of the classroom, preparing students for learning experiences abroad and understanding the challenges of international exchanges and intercultural communication. The sessions will be held from noon to 1 p.m. in room 110 of the Henderson Building, on Sept. 2, Oct. 10 and Nov. 9. In September, editors in Penn State's Division of Undergraduate Studies will unveil a new look for The Mentor: An Academic Advising Journal. The new Web design and structure will accommodate the online journal's rapid growth within the academic advising community in the last decade and will help to make readers' visits to the site more educational, productive and comfortable. "Organizing for Student Success: The University College Model," a new monograph published by the National Resource Center for the First-Year Experience and Students in Transition, includes a section devoted to Discover House, Penn State's special living option for exploratory students. Written by Eric R. White, executive director of the Division of Undergraduate Studies and associate dean for advising, the article showcases Discover House as a living-learning community for first-year students and highlights both its inception in 2000 and growing importance as a unique initiative for students investigating majors.
