Penn State head coach Coquese Washington has been selected as the 2011 BCA Female Coach of the Year by the Black Coaches & Administrators. The BCA Award recipients will be honored during the 2011 BCA National Convention and Expo, during a luncheon event on Friday, May 27 at the Renaissance Vinoy St. Petersburg (Fla.) Resort & Golf Club. Washington recently completed her fourth season at the helm of the Lady Lions. Penn State returned to the national stage this season with a second-place finish in the Big Ten regular season standings, a runner-up finish in the Big Ten Tournament and a berth in the NCAA Tournament. The consistently high Academic Progress Rate scores annually earned by Penn State student-athletes are reflected in today's initial compilation of APR scores for head coaches in six sports. The National Collegiate Athletic Association's release of APR data starting with the 2003-04 academic year shows that the five Penn State head coaches consistently produce teams who beat the average Division I APR score for their respective sport. The NCAA announced yearly APR scores for all Division I head coaches in baseball (Robbie Wine), men's basketball (Ed DeChellis), women's basketball (Coquese Washington), football (Joe Paterno), and women's indoor and outdoor track and field (Beth Alford-Sullivan). Coquese's Drive for Women's Resource Center set for Aug. 20

The Third Annual Coquese's Drive for the Centre County Women's Resource Center presented by the Lady Lion Cager Club will take place on Friday, Aug. 20 at the Penn State Blue Course, Lady Lion head coach Coquese Washington announced today. The tournament will commence with a 12:30 p.m. shotgun start. All proceeds from the event will be donated to the Centre County Women's Resource Center. (more)

Penn State women's basketball coach Coquese Washington has signed a two-year contract extension to coach the Lady Lions through the 2013-14 season, Director of Athletics Tim Curley announced Wednesday. In keeping with the University policy, specific terms of the agreement were not released. "We are very pleased with the progress that our women's basketball program has made under Coquese," Curley said. "With the return to the postseason for the first time in five years and back-to-back nationally-ranked recruiting classes, Coquese has established a solid foundation to put Lady Lion basketball back on the track to national prominence. Her commitment to this program and this community is unparalleled and I look forward to seeing her on the sidelines for many years to come." (more)

Clemson Athletic Director Terry Don Phillips announced the hiring of Itoro Umoh Coleman on Monday as Head Coach of the Women's Basketball program. Coleman, a 2000 graduate of Clemson who was named to the ACC's 50-Year Anniversary Team in 2002, returns to Clemson after three years as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Penn State. "This is a very exciting time and great opportunity for Itoro and her family," Penn State head coach Coquese Washington said. "She has been a very valuable member of the Lady Lion family and we appreciate all she has done to put this program on track for return to national prominence. We wish Itoro all the best and look forward to watching her progress at Clemson." (more)

The Penn State Lady Lions (15-4, 7-2) moved into the 23rd spot in this week's Associated Press Top 25 thanks in part to their current six-game winning streak. This is the first national ranking for the Lady Lions since finishing the 2004-05 season ranked No. 22. Penn State is one of two Big Ten teams in the Top 25, joining fourth-ranked Ohio State. Penn State is in second place in the Big Ten with a 15-4 overall record and a 7-2 mark in conference play. The Lady Lions have won six consecutive games and 10 of their last 11 heading into Thursday's home game against Purdue. Penn State has already surpassed their win total from a year ago and has tallied its most Big Ten wins since the 2006-07 campaign. (more)

Washington to be inducted into Greater Flint Area Sports Hall of Fame

Penn State Lady Lion head coach Coquese Washington will be inducted into the Greater Flint (Mich.) Area Sports Hall of Fame on Saturday, Dec. 5 at the Genesys Banquet Center. Washington is one of six individuals and three teams that will be added to the Greater Flint Arena Sports Hall of Fame. Washington will be enshrined for her standout basketball career that began at Flint's Central High School. She was a two-time All-State selection at Central where she led the Indians to their first Saginaw Valley Conference and district championships. (more)

Penn State Lady Lion head coach Coquese Washington was selected to the USA Basketball Women's Junior National Team Committee as announced by USA Basketball Wednesday (March 25). Washington's term will run from 2009-12. "I am very excited and honored to join the Junior National Team Selection Committee," Washington said. "USA Basketball is a great way to bring some of the best players in the country together and I am really looking forward to my role in this process." (more)
