People who read news on the Web tend to trust the gate even if there is no gatekeeper, according to Penn State researchers. When readers access a story from a credible news source they trust through an online portal, they also tend to trust the portal, said S. Shyam Sundar, Distinguished Professor of Communications and co-director of the Media Effects Research Laboratory. Most of these portals use computers, not people, to automatically sort and post stories. (more)

College students looking at photographs spent more time gazing at the people in the pictures than the surrounding elements, even when those people were quite small or not centrally located, according to Penn State researchers. These findings could help the researchers develop better visual-scene displays (VSDs) -- computer-generated images that help people with disabilities learn to communicate. (more)

Having hands-on experience can help job applicants stand out when entering the work force, and being involved with an organization that enhances skill and ability offers students a way to gain that experience. For Penn State students, especially those majoring public relations, marketing and other communications fields, the student organization Happy Valley Communications gives them relevant experience to add to their resumes and skill sets. When sports stories become linked with other social and business issues, professional journalists tend to offer deeper and broader coverage than sports bloggers, according to Penn State researchers. In a study of the way mainstream columnists and popular bloggers covered conservative talk show host Rush Limbaugh's involvement in a partnership attempting to buy a professional football team, the researchers showed that journalists were more likely to include issues such as race and business in their columns, said Marie Hardin, associate director of the John Curley Center for Sports Journalism in the College of Communications. Five Penn State journalism students -- the most from any school in the country -- were selected for internships with MLB.com this summer, marking the second consecutive year the University will have the most interns participating in the program. Their selection marks the fourth year in a row students from the College of Communications have been selected for the program. Penn State had three students selected to participate in each of the past two years. (more)
