A Moroccan farmer taught Penn State students about the properties of vetiver grass, including its ability to clean wastewater. The grass could be used as part of a solution to water-quality problems being experienced in Assoul, Morocco, where students spent time recently.

Penn State's Board of Trustees Friday (Jan. 21) approved the appointment of Moody Nolan Inc., of Columbus, Ohio, as architects for the 48,000-square-foot expansion and partial renovation of the Intramural Building on Penn State's University Park campus. "We are planning to upgrade the Intramural Building as part of our strategy to meet student demand for fitness and recreation facilities at Penn State," said Al Horvath, the University's senior vice president for Finance and Business/treasurer. Penn State named The Dow Chemical Co. its "Corporate Partner of the Year" on Friday, Nov. 5, at the University's Board of Trustees meeting at the Nittany Lion Inn. Penn State President Graham Spanier presented the award to Dow in celebration of the company's longstanding philanthropic commitment to the University. "Dow Chemical's exemplary support of Penn State has touched an enormous variety of programs and initiatives at the University and I look forward to growing this mutually beneficial relationship," said Spanier. Penn State's Board of Trustees approved room and board rates Friday (Nov. 5) for the 2011-12 academic year, acknowledging the ongoing need to maintain Housing and Food Services' 6 million square feet of space University-wide while offering safe, reasonably priced and high-quality living and dining options. "As auxiliary enterprises, the Housing, Food Services and Residence Life programs are entirely self-sustaining and receive no financial support from tuition or state funds," noted Gail Hurley, associate vice president of Auxiliary and Business Services. Penn State's Board of Trustees on Friday (Nov. 5) approved the appointment of Crawford Architects of Kansas City, Mo., and Bohlin Cywinski Jackson of Wilkes-Barre, Pa., as architects for the design of a new 200,000-square-foot, multipurpose ice arena to be constructed at the University Park campus. The arena, the establishment of NCAA Division I men's and women's ice hockey teams and enhanced figure skating opportunities are funded by an $88 million gift, announced in September, from Terrance M. and Kim Pegula. Penn State's Board of Trustees Friday (Nov. 5) approved an $11.7 million renovation of Pollock Dining Commons on Penn State's University Park campus. Renovations to the commons are scheduled for completion in August 2011. Al Horvath, senior vice president for finance and business and treasurer at Penn State, said the 26,600-square-foot space will be fully renovated to reflect the latest trends in food presentation, preparation and overall dining environment. Board approves plan for new lab to expand science research

The Penn State Board of Trustees today (Nov. 5) approved final plans for the Biological Research Laboratory at University Park. According to Al Horvath, senior vice president for Finance and Business, the 20,000-square-foot building is designed to support immunology and infectious disease research. It will also allow Penn State to broaden its research and attract and retain prominent faculty in these fields. Horvath, who presented the plans to the trustees, said the Biological Research Laboratory site is between Park Avenue and Route 322. (more)

Trustees name architect for phase two of Henderson project

Penn State's Board of Trustees today (Nov. 5) announced approval of architects for final plans for Phase Two of the Henderson Project at University Park, which includes renovations and additions to the Henderson South Building. The architects, Bohlin Cywinski Jackson of Wilkes-Barre, will complete the final design for Phase Two of this two-phase project. The trustees approved this same firm of architects in 2008 for work on the first phase, which involves demolishing the existing bridge linking Henderson and Henderson South and construction of the new Biobehaviorial Health Building. Penn State's World Campus is responsible for the University's largest increase in enrollment for 2010-11, trustees learned today (Nov. 5). Enrollment of students studying exclusively online in the World Campus grew by 19 percent over last year, reported Rob Pangborn, vice president and dean for Undergraduate Education. Pangborn was joined by Anne Rohrbach, executive director for Undergraduate Admissions, and Anna Griswold, assistant vice president for Undergraduate Education and executive director for Student Aid, in discussing fall enrollments and updates on admissions and financial aid during the trustees regular November meeting. At the midway point of For the Future: The Campaign for Penn State Students, gifts from alumni and friends totaled almost $1.17 billion--more than half of the University-wide fundraising initiative's $2 billion goal. The announcement came today during a report to Penn State's Board of Trustees by Rodney P. Kirsch, senior vice president for development and alumni and relations. (more)
