Penn State's Board of Trustees Friday (May 14) approved an interim maintenance and operating budget of $3,799,496,000. This budget supports all Penn State operations and enterprises throughout the Commonwealth. The University adopts an interim budget each year so that it has an approved fiscal operating plan from the beginning of the fiscal year, July 1, until the next year's actual budget is approved by the University's Board of Trustees. Penn State's Board of Trustees Friday (May 14) approved the construction of a $29.1 million, LEED-certified addition to the Moore Building on the University Park campus. The addition to the building, on Fischer Road east of the Nittany Lion Inn parking deck, is scheduled for completion in January 2012. Al Horvath, senior vice president for finance and business at Penn State, said the four-story addition will provide more space for research labs for the Department of Psychology in the College of the Liberal Arts. Penn State's Child Study Center, currently located on University Drive, will relocate to this addition to unite the department in one facility. (more)

Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, will purchase Gospel Hill Golf and Country Club Inc., 4415 Steimer Road, from owners Rebecca K. Kathman and Linda K. Milton. The Penn State Board of Trustees approved the purchase Friday (May 14). "The golf course is a key piece of real estate near the Penn State Behrend campus," said Jack Burke, chancellor. "This property offers us a greater range of options for long-term growth and in planning for future campus enhancement." Penn State Behrend has no definitive plans for the property at this time. Penn State will purchase a 1.275-acre property on West College Avenue in Ferguson Township. The University's Board of Trustees on Friday (May 14) approved the purchase of the property at 1445 W. College Ave. from Craig W. and Kathleen L. Kissell for $2.6 million. Located west of the intersection of West College Avenue and Corl Street, the property is contiguous with the University Park campus. (more)

Outgoing Faculty Senate leadership provided Penn State's Board of Trustees an overview of the Senate's work for the 2009-10 academic year, including review of course program proposals, cost-saving measures and numerous advisory and legislative reports. Lee Coraor, immediate past chair of the University Faculty Senate said one of the Senate's most time-consuming tasks is the review and approval of all course and program proposals, which includes the creation, change or elimination of all course and degree programs. With about 850 reviewed by the Senate this past year, Coraor said the move to an online process has greatly increased the efficiency of the reviews. (more)

As the University implements the five-year strategic plan adopted by the Board of Trustees last May, the main considerations for Executive Vice President and Provost Rod Erickson are that the process remains open, collaborative and on track. In a presentation on Friday, May 14, Erickson updated the trustees on the implementation of the plan. "The challenge for Penn State and for our peers in higher education is to find ways to enhance student success and fulfill the University's mission and vision while operating within tight financial constraints - now and into the future," Erickson told the board.
