In an effort to provide an opportunity for more students to attend commencement and to control the cost of room and board, Penn State's graduation ceremonies will be held immediately after the final exam period beginning with the spring semester in 2012, eliminating the weeklong gap that has been observed in the past. Penn State's Board of Trustees Friday (July 9) approved the University's operating budget for 2010-11. Penn State's $4 billion budget is based on appropriations and federal stimulus money totaling $333.9 million from the Pennsylvania budget. "Given the state's financial challenges and the many competing priorities for funding, we are appreciative of the efforts to support higher education and Penn State," said President Graham Spanier in presenting the budget proposal to the board. Penn State's Board of Trustees on July 9 approved tuition and fees for the 2010-11 academic year. Tuition for Commonwealth Campus students will increase 3.9 percent. Tuition for lower division non-resident students at University Park will increase by 4.5 percent, and resident students at University Park will see an increase of 5.9 percent. (more)
Penn State's Board of Trustees Friday (July 9) approved final plans for the Biobehavioral Health Building, which will be located south of Henderson Building between Old Main Lawn and HUB Lawn at University Park. Edward P. Junker III, former chair of the Board of Trustees, was awarded the rank of trustee emeritus on July 9 in recognition of his meritorious service as a board member for 24 years. Although retired from voting and serving as officers, Penn State's trustee emeriti continue to serve on the board as their schedules permit. (more)
The Penn State Alumni Association reported to the Penn State Board of Trustees today that it posted the largest increase in membership in the last five years, gaining more than 3,400 members, as well as chartering and reorganizing six additional alumni groups. Alumni Association President Barry M. Simpson, a 1969 Penn State graduate, outlined these achievements and others of the 2009-10 academic year, as well as reviewed the Alumni Association's strategic goals through the year 2013. (more)
For the first time in its history, Penn State has received more than $200 million in cash gifts from alumni and friends in a single fiscal year, and a record number of donors committed their support to the University during the same period. Romano, recently retired vice president for Commonwealth Campuses and former campus executive officer at Penn State York. After more than four decades at Penn State, Romano retired June 30. (more)
The Swift Building at Penn State Dubois will undergo a full renovation this year, Penn State's Board of Trustees decided Friday (July 9) in a meeting at the campus. Benefits of the $5.2-million facelift include improved accessibility, energy efficiency and an increase in classroom space in the 46-year-old building. (more)
