New graduates of Penn State's Eberly College of Science listened to the commencement address provided by United States Secretary of Energy Steven Chu during spring 2012 graduation ceremonies held May 5 at the Bryce Jordan Center on the University Park campus.

A Moroccan farmer taught Penn State students about the properties of vetiver grass, including its ability to clean wastewater. The grass could be used as part of a solution to water-quality problems being experienced in Assoul, Morocco, where students spent time recently.

In an effort to provide an opportunity for more students to attend commencement and to control the cost of room and board, Penn State's graduation ceremonies will be held immediately after the final exam period beginning with the spring semester in 2012, eliminating the weeklong gap that has been observed in the past. Penn State also will change the way diplomas are packaged and distributed, beginning in the summer of 2011. Penn State President Graham B. Spanier discussed the changes at the Board of Trustees meeting in DuBois today (July 9). (more)

Penn State's Board of Trustees Friday (July 9) approved the University's operating budget for 2010-11. Penn State's $4 billion budget is based on appropriations and federal stimulus money totaling $333.9 million from the Pennsylvania budget. "Given the state's financial challenges and the many competing priorities for funding, we are appreciative of the efforts to support higher education and Penn State," said President Graham Spanier in presenting the budget proposal to the board. University trustees set tuition for 2010-11

Penn State's Board of Trustees on July 9 approved tuition and fees for the 2010-11 academic year. Tuition for Commonwealth Campus students will increase 3.9 percent. Tuition for lower division non-resident students at University Park will increase by 4.5 percent, and resident students at University Park will see an increase of 5.9 percent. (more)

Penn State's Board of Trustees Friday (July 9) approved final plans for the Biobehavioral Health Building, which will be located south of Henderson Building between Old Main Lawn and HUB Lawn at University Park. "This new building will address significant space deficiencies within the College of Health and Human Development, and also will contribute to consolidating the college in one central location," said Al Horvath, senior vice president for finance and business/treasurer. Junker named trustee emeritus

Edward P. Junker III, former chair of the Board of Trustees, was awarded the rank of trustee emeritus on July 9 in recognition of his meritorious service as a board member for 24 years. Although retired from voting and serving as officers, Penn State's trustee emeriti continue to serve on the board as their schedules permit. (more)

The Penn State Alumni Association reported to the Penn State Board of Trustees today that it posted the largest increase in membership in the last five years, gaining more than 3,400 members, as well as chartering and reorganizing six additional alumni groups. Alumni Association President Barry M. Simpson, a 1969 Penn State graduate, outlined these achievements and others of the 2009-10 academic year, as well as reviewed the Alumni Association's strategic goals through the year 2013. (more)

Penn State continues to break fundraising records despite economy

For the first time in its history, Penn State has received more than $200 million in cash gifts from alumni and friends in a single fiscal year, and a record number of donors committed their support to the University during the same period. The announcement came Friday (July 9) in an annual report to the Board of Trustees by Peter Tombros, volunteer chair of For the Future: The Campaign for Penn State Students. (more)

Romano, recently retired vice president for Commonwealth Campuses and former campus executive officer at Penn State York. After more than four decades at Penn State, Romano retired June 30. (more)

The Swift Building at Penn State Dubois will undergo a full renovation this year, Penn State's Board of Trustees decided Friday (July 9) in a meeting at the campus. Benefits of the $5.2-million facelift include improved accessibility, energy efficiency and an increase in classroom space in the 46-year-old building. (more)

On Friday, July 9, Penn State DuBois Chancellor Anita McDonald gave Penn State Board of Trustees members a quick overview of the campus' strategic plan when the board met at the campus for its meeting. Each year, the July board meeting is held at one of the other 23 Penn State locations to give Trustees a first-hand view of life and operations on various Penn State campuses. With this meeting taking place at DuBois during the 75th anniversary of the campus, McDonald seized the opportunity to showcase the best that Penn State DuBois has to offer and to highlight future plans.
