New graduates of Penn State's Eberly College of Science listened to the commencement address provided by United States Secretary of Energy Steven Chu during spring 2012 graduation ceremonies held May 5 at the Bryce Jordan Center on the University Park campus.

A Moroccan farmer taught Penn State students about the properties of vetiver grass, including its ability to clean wastewater. The grass could be used as part of a solution to water-quality problems being experienced in Assoul, Morocco, where students spent time recently.

Karen B. Peetz was elected chair of Penn State's Board of Trustees Friday (Jan. 20). Keith E. Masser was elected vice chair. Peetz and Masser succeed Steve A. Garban and John P. Surma, who served as chair and vice chair, respectively, in 2010 and 2011. David J. Gray, whose appointment as senior vice president for finance and business also was approved by the board, was elected treasurer, effective Feb. 6. (more)

Trustees approve 2012-13 room and board rates

With expenses including food and utilities costs projected to rise, the Board of Trustees Friday, Jan. 20, approved a modest increase in room and board rates for the 2012-13 academic year. The average room and board rate, including a standard double-occupancy residence hall room and the most common meal plan, will be $4,495 per semester, an increase of 2.86 percent or $125 over the current year's rate of $4,370. This is the second-lowest percentage increase in the last 20 years. (more)

Penn State's Board of Trustees Friday (Jan. 20) approved the final design and authorized the awarding of contracts for the construction of the Pegula Ice Arena at University Park, as designed by Crawford Architects of Kansas City, Mo., with Bohlin Cywinski Jackson of Wilkes-Barre, Pa. The new ice arena will house Penn State's NCAA Division I men's and women's hockey programs, and also will be used as a year-round recreational and educational asset for members of the University community as well as for children, youth and families throughout the area. Trustees approve final plans for renovations to Moore, CEDAR Buildings

Penn State's Board of Trustees Friday (Jan. 20) approved final plans and the authorization to award contracts to complete renovations to Moore Building, and start renovations to CEDAR Building, on the University Park campus. The trustees approved project plans by Philadelphia architectural firm KlingStubbins, who also designed phase one of the Moore Building project. (more)

Board of Trustees member Kenneth Frazier, chair of the Special Investigations Task Force, provided an update Friday (Jan. 20) on the work of the independent team looking into issues related to the allegations against Jerry Sandusky.
