A new episode of the new original series, "Impact the World," will air at 10:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 31, on the Big Ten Network. Hosted by Dennis Haysbert, the weekly program showcases some of the incredible Big Ten breakthroughs that are changing lives in the United States and around the world. Penn State alumni, students and fans in Texas for Monday's TicketCity Bowl, featuring the Nittany Lions and the No. 19 Houston Cougars, can get revved up at the Penn State bowl Pep Rally on Sunday, Jan. 1. Penn State's TicketCity Bowl pep rally will begin at approximately 4:15 p.m. CT Sunday at Gate A of the historic Cotton Bowl Stadium. The rally will feature Interim Head Coach Tom Bradley and team captains Drew Astorino, Quinn Barham, Derek Moye and Devon Still. The Penn State Blue Band, cheerleaders and the Nittany Lion also will participate. The rally is free and will be preceded by Houston's rally at 3:30 p.m. at the Cotton Bowl. (more)
With a history of Rose Bowl competition dating back more than a century, the Big Ten Conference and Pac-12 Conference announced today (Dec. 28) a collaborative effort to enhance long-term scheduling commitments between the two conferences across all sports among the 24 institutions. The new Big Ten-Pac-12 collaboration will feature more games between the two conferences in an effort to enhance the experiences for all student-athletes, fans and alumni while broadening the national scope of both conferences. Details of the new effort will continue to unfold as administrators and conference staff members meet in the coming year. (more)
Approximately 100 elementary school students from Louis Armstrong Public School in Chicago helped launch the Big Ten's "Honoring Legends. Building Leaders. Mobile Tour" at the Big Ten office in Park Ridge, Ill., on Wednesday. Part of the Big Ten's SCORE program, the students were the first to participate in the mobile tour's activities and to have their pictures taken with the Stagg-Paterno Championship Trophy, which made its first public appearance Wednesday morning. The Big Ten announced Thursday (Aug. 4) that conference football programs will move to a nine-game Big Ten schedule beginning with the 2017 season. Three teams each from the Legends Division and Leaders Division will feature five conference home games during odd-numbered years, while the other three schools from each division will host five conference contests during even-numbered years. The 2017 schedule will include five conference home outings for Iowa, Michigan State and Nebraska from the Legends Division and Illinois, Indiana and Ohio State from the Leaders Division. The 2018 schedule will feature five Big Ten home games for Michigan, Minnesota and Northwestern of the Legends Division and Penn State, Purdue and Wisconsin of the Leaders Division. (more)
Coach Joe Paterno and a trio of standout football student-athletes will represent Penn State at the 40th Annual Big Ten Kickoff Luncheon Festivities, July 28-29 in Chicago. Pre-season All-Big Ten honorees Michael Mauti (Mandeville, La.) and Derek Moye (Rochester) and senior running back Joe Suhey (Deerfield, Ill.) will join Paterno at the prestigious event. Activities will be held at the Hyatt Regency McCormick Place in Chicago as the Big Ten prepares for its 116th season of football competition. (more)
The University of Nebraska-Lincoln officially becomes the 12th member of the Big Ten Conference and 13th member of the Committee on Institutional Cooperation (CIC) on July 1, a year after it was unanimously approved for membership in the conference by the member university presidents and chancellors. "We are very excited to welcome a new academic and athletic partner in the University of Nebraska-Lincoln," said Penn State President Graham Spanier, who previously served as Nebraska's chancellor from 1991 to 1995. "Not only will UNL benefit from the assets in place in the Big Ten and CIC, but the current members will benefit from the addition of another top academic institution with a tremendous athletic program." The Big Ten Conference announced today that the Council of Presidents/Chancellors approved a recommendation from university administrators for the cities of Chicago, Hoffman Estates and Indianapolis to rotate as the host sites for the Big Ten Football Championship Games and Men's and Women's Basketball Tournaments for a four-year period beginning with the 2012-13 academic year. The Big Ten Conference on Monday (March 21) announced the intention to recommend the establishment of men's ice hockey as an official conference sport, with The Pennsylvania State University one of the six institutions that would compete for the 2013-14 academic year. Penn State is establishing NCAA Division I men's and women's hockey programs, with the first season of competition set for 2012-13. The Nittany Lions would join Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota, Ohio State and Wisconsin in vying for the Big Ten men's ice hockey championship. Big Ten rules allow for a conference championship when six institutions sponsor a program in any given sport. (more)

In the next edition of "Expert Opinion with Graham Spanier," three Penn State experts join Penn State President Graham Spanier to discuss the care and feeding of Division I college athletes. Spanier is joined by Kristine Clark, assistant professor and director of sports nutrition; Beth Alford-Sullivan, director and head coach of men's and women's track and field/cross-country; and Andres Casais, former men's soccer player and senior team captain.
