Students majoring in Engineering and Occupational Therapy at Penn State Berks have collaborated to create devices to meet the needs of individuals with physical challenges as part of the Adaptive Equipment Project (ADEP). They will present their designs in two separate sessions: the first at 1 p.m. on Monday, April 23, and the second at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, April 25, both in room 121, Gaige Technology and Business Innovation Building. Students enrolled in the campus' Environmental Science course will give presentations on a chosen environmental issue and their action to address the issue within the community as part of the campus' Environmental Awareness and Community Action Project (EACAP). The presentations will take place beginning at 11 a.m. on April 20, 23, 25 and 27; in the Perkins Student Center multipurpose room. The presentations are open to the campus community. (more)
The next Penn State Berks Division of Science Colloquium will feature Richard Rest, who will give a presentation titled "Who is Afraid of the Big Bad Bacillus? Studies on a Pore-forming Toxin of the Anthrax Bacillus" at 1 p.m. on Friday, April 20, in room 5, Luerssen Building. Laurie Grobman, professor of English and women's studies at Penn State Berks, is the 2012 recipient of the President's Award for Excellence in Academic Integration, which is given to a full-time faculty member of the University who has exhibited extraordinary achievement in the integration of teaching and research or creative accomplishments, and service. Grobman is the first recipient of the award from a Penn State campus outside University Park. (more)
Laura Hirneisen Fast, a 2006 Penn State graduate who attended Berks campus and earned a baccalaureate degree in professional writing, recently won the 2012 Central PA Magazine Writing Contest, beating out more than 200 other entries with her short story titled "Deal." (more)
From the Commission of European Union to The Hague to the International Criminal Court, students enrolled in Penn State Berks' International Law and Organizations course stepped out of the classroom and visited Belgium, along with Randall Fegley, coordinator of the global studies degree program and associate professor of history and politics at the campus. In the upcoming Engineering, Business, and Computing (EBC) Division Research Interest Group lecture, Khaled Abdou, assistant professor of financial services at Penn State Berks and Sudip Ghosh, associate professor of business at Penn State Berks, will present "The Anatomy of Reverse Mergers: Why Foreign Firms Target the U.S. Market." Their discussion will take place at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, April 18, in room 244 of the Gaige Technology and Business Innovation Building. David Aurentz, associate professor of chemistry at Penn State Berks; Frederick Haag, associate professor of visual arts at Penn State York, and Mark Maughmer, professor of aerospace engineering in the College of Engineering, have received the Alumni/Student Award for Excellence in Teaching and have been named 2012 Penn State Teaching Fellows. The Penn State Alumni Association, in conjunction with undergraduate and graduate governing bodies, established the award in 1988. It honors distinguished teaching and provides encouragement and incentive for excellence in teaching. Recipients are expected to share their talents and expertise with others throughout the University system during the year following the award presentation. (more)

R. Keith Hillkirk, Penn State Berks chancellor, has been honored with the 2012 Shirley Hendrick Award, presented by the Penn State Commission for Adult Learners for service to adult learners. The Shirley Hendrick Award recognizes an administrator University-wide who has contributed to the success of Penn State's efforts to serve adult learners. The award is named in memory of Shirley Hendrick (1936-2000), the first recipient, dean for continuing education in the Smeal College of Business and inaugural chair of the Commission for Adult Learners, who advocated for continuing education.
