Students from four area high schools recently visited Penn State Beaver to view the Penn State EcoCAR2, an experimental car designed by the Penn State Advanced Vehicle Team, as well as an alternative fuel car supplied by Pittsburgh Clean Cities. The students, who were from Western Beaver, Seneca Valley, Hopewell, and Blackhawk High Schools, also attended an information session about advanced fuels and vehicles that was presented by members of the EcoCAR2 Team. In addition, the vehicle was the subject of a feature story that appeared in a recent edition of the Beaver County Times. Penn State's EcoCAR2 is the result of a three-year national competition known as EcoCAR2: Plugging In to the Future which was developed as part of a competition among 15 universities and sponsored by General Motors and the U.S. Department of Energy. For information about the Penn State EcoCAR2, visit http://www.hev.psu.edu. (more)
Penn State Beaver students and faculty who spent last month's spring break working and living with the Navajo Nation recently gave a presentation about their experiences. The program was the final event in the 2011-2012 Penn State Beaver Faculty Speakers Series. The series will resume in the fall semester. Evenings were focused on learning about the Navajo Nation culture, including creation stories, dances, and ceremonies. In addition, the group visited several famous sites, including the Grand Canyon and the Painted Desert. The trip was led by JoAnn Chirico, senior instructor in sociology; Irene Wolf, senior instructor in philosophy, and Robin Schreck, student activities and residence life coordinator. For more information about the Navajo Nation or the trip, contact Schreck at ras62@psu.edu or 724-773-3947.

Karen Barr is one of six Penn State faculty members who received the 2012 George W. Atherton Award for Excellence in Teaching. Barr is a senior instructor in business at Penn State Beaver. The award, named after Penn State's seventh president, honors excellence in teaching at the undergraduate level. A member of the Penn State Beaver faculty since 2000, Barr receives consistently high Student Ratings of Teaching Effectiveness, particularly with respect to the clarity of her presentations, her interest in teaching the course and her willingness to help students make progress. 'I try to make students see it is not only important to get good grades, but it is also important to think of the class as a place to learn about life,' she said. Although her advising load is officially around 65 to 70 students per year, more than 90 students seek her assistance on a routine basis, according to one nominator. Barr can be contacted at kcb10@psu.edu or 724-773-3869. (more)
