New graduates of Penn State's Eberly College of Science listened to the commencement address provided by United States Secretary of Energy Steven Chu during spring 2012 graduation ceremonies held May 5 at the Bryce Jordan Center on the University Park campus.

A Moroccan farmer taught Penn State students about the properties of vetiver grass, including its ability to clean wastewater. The grass could be used as part of a solution to water-quality problems being experienced in Assoul, Morocco, where students spent time recently.

Former White House administrator joins the 'conversation' on WPSU

During a time when the majority of high-level government jobs were held by men, the Nixon administration launched a little-known initiative to recruit women to government, and a Penn State alumna led the effort. Barbara Franklin went on to serve as Secretary of Commerce under President George H.W. Bush. She later collaborated with Penn State's Special Collections library to chronicle the Nixon initiative in a series of oral histories titled "A Few Good Women." Franklin will talk about her experiences on the next episode of "Conversations from Penn State."

The show will air on the Big Ten Network at 6 and 9 p.m. on April 6. It also will air on WPSU-TV at 9 p.m. on April 8. The show also can be viewed at http://conversations.psu.edu online. (more)

Libraries receives $500,000 commitment from Barbara Hackman Franklin

Barbara Hackman Franklin of Washington, D.C., former U.S. Secretary of Commerce and a member of Penn State's class of 1962, has directed $500,000 to name the Barbara Hackman Franklin Atrium in central Pattee Library on the University Park campus as part of the new and transformational Knowledge Commons project. This space, currently identified as the lending service lobby, will be renovated into additional service space. The gift is a continuation of Franklin's long-standing support for the University Libraries. (more)

-- Barbara H. Franklin, '62, distinguished alumna, the 29th United States Secretary of Commerce and the highest-ranking woman in the administration of President George H.W. Bush. Franklin spoke Thursday, April 2, in Foster Auditorium on Penn State's University Park campus. Her presentation, "A Few Good Women...: a Watershed for Women's History," discussed the efforts and results achieved by a few good women (and men) in advancing the cause of women in government, 1969-74, which had ripple effects in business, education and the professions. The public is invited to a presentation, "A Few Good Women...: a Watershed for Women's History," by the Honorable Barbara H. Franklin, 4:30-5:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 2, in Foster Auditorium, 101 Pattee Library, University Park campus. An exhibit, "A Few Good Women...: Advancing the Cause of Women in Government, 1969-74," is on display March 6 through April 17 in the main exhibit hall of Pattee Library. (more)
