Susan L. Brantley, Distinguished Professor of Geosciences at Penn State and director of the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences' Earth and Environmental Systems Institute (EESI) has been elected to membership in the National Academy of Sciences for her excellence in original scientific research. Membership in the NAS is one of the highest honors given to a scientist or engineer in the United States. (more)
Philip C. Bevilacqua, professor of chemistry at Penn State University, has been honored with the 2012 C.I. Noll Award for Excellence in Teaching by the Eberly College of Science Alumni Society. Instituted in 1972 and named in honor of Clarence I. Noll, dean of the college from 1965 to 1971, the award is the highest honor for undergraduate teaching in the college. Students, faculty members, and alumni nominate outstanding faculty members who best exemplify the key characteristics of a Penn State educator, and a committee of students and faculty members select among nominees. Jill Buchanan, a nurse practitioner with University Health Services (UHS) has received the 2012 Ally Recognition Award from Penn State's Commission on Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Equity (CLGBTE). Presented during the Lavender Graduation Ceremony held April 20, the Ally Award is given to an individual within the University community who has shown outstanding service regarding LGBTQ concerns. Amy M. Sawyer, assistant professor of nursing at Penn State, has been appointed to the Research Committee of the Sleep Research Society, an international organization that fosters scientific investigation of sleep and sleep disorders. Lloyd Rhoades, Manager of Central Services at Physical Plant was recently inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame. Lloyd was honored for his lifetime service to the sport of wrestling. Serving in a variety of positions from Head Coach of the Bald Eagle Area Elementary program, Tournament Director, Secretary-Treasurer of Pennsylvania Junior Wrestling, and Chief Business Officer for the state-wide organization, Lloyd has served his sport well. Three Penn State faculty members have been named Evan Pugh Professors, joining a list of only 62 recognized since the title's inception in 1960. Even Pugh Professorships are the highest honor the University bestows on its faculty.
The latest honorees are Jainendra K. Jain, Erwin Mueller Professor of Physics, Eberly College of Science; James F. Kasting, Distinguished Professor of Geosciences, College of Earth and Mineral Sciences; and Bruce E. Logan, Kappe Professor of Environmental Engineering, College of Engineering. (more)
Randall Robinson, distinguished scholar in residence at Penn State Law and Penn State School of International Affairs, author, and human rights activist will be among the 31 heroes of the anti-apartheid movement who will be honored at a Freedom Day ceremony on April 27 in Pretoria, South Africa. The day marks the 18th anniversary of South Africa's first all-race vote. Robinson was one of only three foreigners honored for fighting apartheid, along with former U.S. Sen. Edward Kennedy, who will receive the award posthumously, and Russian academic Apollon B. Davidson. (more)
