New graduates of Penn State's Eberly College of Science listened to the commencement address provided by United States Secretary of Energy Steven Chu during spring 2012 graduation ceremonies held May 5 at the Bryce Jordan Center on the University Park campus.

A Moroccan farmer taught Penn State students about the properties of vetiver grass, including its ability to clean wastewater. The grass could be used as part of a solution to water-quality problems being experienced in Assoul, Morocco, where students spent time recently.

Dewey named dean of University Libraries and Scholarly Communications

Barbara I. Dewey, dean of Libraries and professor at the University of Tennessee, has been appointed Penn State's dean of University Libraries and Scholarly Communications, effective August 1, pending approval by the University's Board of Trustees. She will succeed Nancy Eaton, who has held the position since 1997 and will continue her ties with the University in retirement as dean emeritus. (more)

Ann Snowman, head of University Libraries Access Services, was recently selected to participate in the prestigious Research Library Leadership Fellows (RLLF) program, aimed at developing future senior-level leaders in large libraries. Designed and sponsored by the Association of Research Libraries, the program is highly competitive -- only 21 fellows were selected this year. Snowman was nominated by Nancy Eaton, dean of University Libraries and Scholarly Communications. (more)
