"Into Warmer Air," created collaboratively by the dancers in the University Dance Company (UDC), under the direction of Elisha Clark Halpin, associate professor of dance, was selected to be performed at the 2012 Northeast Regional Gala, which was held at Penn State's University Park campus, March 5, 2012, as part of the American College Dance Festival. Mark Ballora, associate professor of music technology, has contributed sonifications of astronomical phenomena that serve as backing tracks on the upcoming album "Mysterium Tremendum" by the Mickey Hart Band, which will be released April 10.
Sonifications are renderings of information in an aural form, similar in concept to visualization, except that the information is presented to the ear, rather than to the eye. (more)

Ferguson, dean, School of Humanities and Social Sciences, American University in Cairo, will give a series of public lectures as the Institute for the Arts and Humanities Distinguished Visiting Professor. Penn State Centre Stage will present "Gizmo" April 10-21 at the Playhouse Theatre on the University Park campus. "Gizmo," a new play by award-winning playwright Anthony Clarvoe and directed by Dan Carter, is set in the future and addresses the rapid evolution of technology and where it may lead us. (more)
Christopher P. Staley, distinguished professor of art in the College of Arts and Architecture, has been named Penn State laureate for 2012-13, succeeding Linda Patterson Miller, professor of English at Penn State Abington. During his upcoming laureate year, Staley -- the fifth University faculty member to hold this prestigious title -- plans to develop a series of talks and presentations on "Art and Life: Where They Intersect," drawing from his 30 years of experience as a ceramic artist and educator. He begins his Penn State laureate duties in July 2012. (more)
Phillip Wagoner, professor of art history and chair of the archaeology program, Wesleyan University, will give a public lecture, "Power, Memory, Architecture: Contested Sites on India's Deccan Plateau, 1300-1600," at 6 p.m. on Thursday, April 5 in 112 Borland Building on the Penn State University Park campus. Wagoner's lecture is sponsored by the Harold E. Dickson Memorial Lecture Series, which is made possible by an endowment created by the late Mary Neilly, 1947 alumnus bachelor of arts in journalism, in honor of Dickson, 1900-1987, one of the founders of the Department of Art History and a highly respected scholar in the field of American art and architecture. New York artist Stephanie Diamond will give a free public lecture, "Key Note Seeker," at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, March 27, in the Palmer Lipcon Auditorium, Palmer Museum of Art, on Penn State's University Park campus. Diamond employs art as a vehicle to bridge gaps and provide access to places and people that would otherwise never come together. Her lecture is sponsored by the Penn State School of Visual Arts John M. Anderson Visiting Artists and Scholars Lecture Series. (more)
When Diavolo dance theater of Los Angeles performs the world premiere of "Transit Space" at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 19, in Eisenhower Auditorium, a number of Penn State students will be in the audience. Some will be more than observers.
Diavolo Artistic Director Jacques Heim created "Transit Space," a work commissioned by the Center for the Performing Arts at Penn State, with the help of 10 University students who traveled to Los Angeles last June as part of a Creative Campus Innovations Grant Program collaboration called "The Secret Life of Public Spaces." "THE PACT," a new romantic comedy written, produced and directed by Penn State professor and local filmmaker Matt Toronto, will be screened at the State Theatre in downtown State College, Pa., from March 31 to April 4. The production involved several members of the Penn State community, including faculty member Renee Kredell, who served as production designer. In the cast are current Penn State School of Theatre student Kira Lace Hawkins and Penn State School of Theatre alumna Nika Ericson. (more)
The Committee on Multiethnic Concerns (COMC), an affiliate organization of the National Art Education Association, has established an annual lecture series titled the "Grace Hampton Lecture Series." Named for Grace Hampton, professor of art, art education and integrative arts, and Senior Faculty Mentor at Penn State, the lecture series "honors the courageous leadership of Dr. Grace Hampton that has become an important cornerstone for COMC organizational vibrancy."
