Mike Rybar made final adjustments to the Penn State Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineering teams Goldberg machine prior to the 2012 Rube Goldberg competition held on Feb. 11 at Penn State's Nittany Lion Inn. Rybar and his team created a musically themed machine that needed to complete a simple task (inflate a balloon) in twenty or more elaborate steps. The annual competition is named for cartoonist Rube Goldberg who created famous artwork depicting overly complicated machines doing everyday tasks.

Penn State Altoona was out in full force at the Bryce Jordan Center on the University Park campus for the 40th annual IFC/Panhellenic Dance Marathon (THON). Altoona campus contributed nearly $83,000 to the record-breaking $10.68 million total, coming in second among all commonwealth campuses. (more)

Professor earns research fellowship

Richard Flarend, associate professor of physics at Penn State Altoona, has earned a research collaboration fellowship for this summer. Flarend will collaborate with University Park colleague Jeffrey Brownson, assistant professor of energy and mineral engineering in Penn State's College of Earth and Mineral Sciences, on a project titled "Seasonal Storage of Solar Thermal Energy."

This University-wide fellowship program was established in order to encourage research collaboration among faculty members across Penn State. (more)

Murphy set to publish fifth book of poetry

Erin Murphy, associate professor of English at Penn State Altoona, has just signed a contract for her fifth book of poetry, "Distant Glitter." The collection will be published by Word Press of Cincinnati, Ohio, in July 2013.

"Distant Glitter" features the poem "Debriefing: A Poem in Parts," winner of the 2011 Normal School Poetry Prize. Murphy's previous poetry collections include "Word Problems," "Too Much of This World," "Dislocation and Other Theories" and "Science of Desire." In addition, she is coeditor with colleague Todd Davis of "Making Poems: 40 Poems with Commentary by the Poets," an anthology of poetry and creative nonfiction.
