New graduates of Penn State's Eberly College of Science listened to the commencement address provided by United States Secretary of Energy Steven Chu during spring 2012 graduation ceremonies held May 5 at the Bryce Jordan Center on the University Park campus.

A Moroccan farmer taught Penn State students about the properties of vetiver grass, including its ability to clean wastewater. The grass could be used as part of a solution to water-quality problems being experienced in Assoul, Morocco, where students spent time recently.

Sunder named AVCA second-team All-American

Redshirt senior men's volleyball player Joe Sunder (Greensburg, Pa.) was named a second team AVCA All-American, the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) announced Thursday (April 26). This is Sunder's second career award and brings Penn State's total number of All-Americans to 79 since 1971. (more)

Seven Penn State men's gymnasts, Felix Aronovich (Kiryat Bialik, Israel), Adrian Evans (Boulder, Colo.), Craig Hernandez (Libertyville, Ill.), Nihir Kothari (Malvern, Pa.), Parker Raque (Louisville, Ky.), Nestor Rodriguez (Guaynabo, P.R.), and Scott Rosenthal (Clearfield, Pa.) earned All-America honors with top eight finishes in the individual finals of the 2012 National Collegiate Championships on Saturday (April 21) night at Oklahoma's Lloyd Noble Center. Penn State men's swimming & diving returned from the 2012 NCAA Championships in Federal Way, Wash. following one of the most historic years in school history. The Nittany Lions earned 17th place with 54 points behind five All-Americans, taking big strides in head coach John Hargis's fourth-year at the helm of the program. (more)

Penn State men's and women's fencing finished fifth in the nation at the 2012 National Championships. Penn State ended the championships with 151 team points, including strong performances from Men's Saber, Women's Saber, and Women's Epee. Ohio State won the National Championship with 182 points. The Buckeyes were followed by Princeton with 161 points, Notre Dame with 160 points, and St. John's with 158 points. (more)

The Penn State 400 medley relay earned eighth place and All-America honors late Thursday (March 22) night at the NCAA Championships. The Nittany Lions touched the wall in 3:08.77 for 22 team points. Penn State sits in 16th place after a full day of competition. (more)

The Penn State wrestling team captured its second straight NCAA Championship on the strength of six All-Americans and three individual national titles.

The Penn State Nittany Lion wrestling team added three new individual champions to its ledgers to complete a stellar run to the 2012 NCAA National Championship. Senior Frank Molinaro (Barnegat, N.J.), sophomore David Taylor (St. Paris, Ohio) and sophomore Ed Ruth (Harrisburg, Pa.) all claimed crowns as Penn State won its second straight NCAA team title. The Nittany Lions outdistanced second place Minnesota by a whopping 25.5 points. The Nittany Lions checked in with 143.0 points while the Gophers were second with 117.5. (more)

The Penn State Nittany Lion wrestling team will have five wrestlers in the national semifinals after a superb quarterfinal showing at the 2012 NCAA Wrestling Championships. The Nittany Lions went 5-2, including two pins and a major, to race out to a large lead in the team race. Penn State is in first place with 78.5 while Cornell is in second with 61.5. Iowa is in third with 58.5 while Minnesota is in fourth with 56.0 and Oklahoma State fifth with 50.0. The national semifinals take place, along with more consolation action, tonight at 6 p.m. CDT/7 p.m. EDT, and will be broadcast live on ESPNU and ESPN3.com. (more)

The Nittany Lion 4x400-meter quartet of Aaron Nadolsky (Altoona, Pa.), Brandon Bennett-Green (Elkins Park, Pa.), Casimir Loxsom (New Haven, Conn.) and Brady Gehret (Altoona, Pa.) have officially earned First Team All-America honors, announced on Monday by the United States Track and Field/Cross Country Coaches' Association (USTFCCCA). Also earning recognition were second-team honorees Evonne Britton (El Paso, Texas), Loxsom, and Robby Creese (Mount Airy, Md.). (more)
