Mike Rybar made final adjustments to the Penn State Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineering teams Goldberg machine prior to the 2012 Rube Goldberg competition held on Feb. 11 at Penn State's Nittany Lion Inn. Rybar and his team created a musically themed machine that needed to complete a simple task (inflate a balloon) in twenty or more elaborate steps. The annual competition is named for cartoonist Rube Goldberg who created famous artwork depicting overly complicated machines doing everyday tasks.

Funding for Penn State agricultural research and extension programs would remain at 2011-12 levels under Gov. Tom Corbett's proposed state budget for 2012-13, unveiled Feb. 7. Nearly two-thirds of Pennsylvania is covered by forests, with more than 70 percent of those woodlands privately owned. Recent estimates indicate Pennsylvania has more than 600,000 private forest landowners, representing about one out of every nine households.

To better serve these landowners and advise them about forest conservation, Penn State's College of Agricultural Sciences has created the Center for Private Forests.

Jacqueline Bates was happy as a Penn State economics major, but she couldn't help feeling like there was something missing in her academic life -- she wanted to find a way of applying her major in a more meaningful way. During a meeting with her Division of Undergraduate Studies advisor, she discovered the Community, Environment and Development major. "I thought it was the perfect combination of my interests in economics, society and the environment," she said. As a part of her new major in the College of Agricultural Sciences, the State College, Pa., resident elected to take an Ag2Africa course. The class required her to visit Africa, so she spent a week and a half last May studying bean crops in Mozambique. (more)
