Alessandro Bonanno, assistant professor of agricultural economics in Penn State's College of Agricultural Sciences, has received the 2009 Roy C. Buck Faculty Award in the Agricultural Sciences for his article, "Competition Effects of Supermarket Services." The award recognizes an untenured faculty member in the college for the best article in the social or human sciences to be published in a refereed scholarly journal in the past two years. (more)

When the phone rings at the Stroud Township office, supervisor Ed Cramer knows that a confused -- and often angry -- taxpayer may be on the other end of the line. Cramer can sympathize. The number of authorities and the varieties of taxes that are levied aren't always easy to follow. Pennsylvanians pay taxes to local, school district, county, state and federal authorities. The types of taxes include income, real estate and sales. Such taxpayer grumblings have led Penn State Extension -- a unit of Penn State Outreach -- and the County Commissioners Association of Pennsylvania (CCAP) to offer a new series of local tax forums for taxpayers and local government officials, like Cramer, to discuss the complex issues of taxation and tax fairness and reform. For more than six years, Bradford County dairy producer Glen Gorrell has relied on Penn State Extension to help him run a profitable business. Through Extension's Dairy Alliance program, Gorrell has long benefited from useful tips on labor management and financial stewardship at his Smithfield dairy. Over the past year, though, Penn State has helped increase Gorrell's bottom line in a new way -- by helping him keep his 570 dairy cows healthier and more productive. (more)
